Day 232 (13.11.07)
After a bit of a lie in we had breakfast. We were nearly not able to use the kichen as it closed at 10am - and got a bit of a telling off from the cleaner, oooops. Going into town we had a quick stop at the jetty to say hello to Sammy (the resident sea lion). He was more than happy to put on a bit of a show for us as he was being thrown some scraps by a local fisherman. Tearing ourselves away we continued into town for a food shop and more importantly a new box of Goon.
Dropping the food back off at the hostel we got another telling off from the cleaner, who was STILL cleaning the kitchen, for walking on her wet floor - naughty us!
For the rest of the day we had planned to have a relaxed drive around the 'tourist drive' where we had been told there were a number of great beaches and lookouts. Our standards on both accounts were very high following some amazing places we had visited however we were promised that we wouldnt be disapointed.
Our first stop was overlooking
a beach just outside the town called West bay. This is obviously popular with surfers who were bobbing in the water obviously determined to catch some 'knarley waves dude'. We sat and watched them with varying degrees of sucsess admiring the good ones and cringing at some of their 'wipeouts'. We're trying to get into the surfing language - how are we doing?
Back in the car we went to Twilight bay along the coast and swam out to the large rock with a hole in it just off the beach. A great swim of a little chilly! We then went over to the Observatory lookout. However after being bombarded with flies and having seen better views on previous days we didn't stay long before we went back to the car and continued on our way.
There were then a couple of great views we took in along the road along 11 mile beach and 10 mile lagoon which were well worth stopping at and we rated better than the main lookout on the route.
Getting a little hungry, we were on a mission to find a nice spot for a picnic, turning down a small road
and ending up in a carpark near the edge of a lake. Conrad, who was driving for the day, was however not content with the carpark and squeezed through the posts to park right on the beach of the lake with a fantastic view.
Meandering our way back to Esperance we had a quick stop at the information centre and the local internet cafe before helping Michael out with some of his spare BBQ food and then cooking our own dinner. We once again settled in with some 'Goon' - we were all becoming fans of this cheap wine.
Day 233 (14.11.07)
After yet another relaxing morning where we all caught up with our books we eventually surfaced and went on a trip to Cape La Grande. The beaches the previous day were good, however we had the best beaches yet to come.
We went straight to Lucky Bay one of the famous beaches in the area and when we got there we were stunned but the pure white beach leading into beautiful clear turquoise water, extremely high on our exclusive 'Western Australia best beach list'. Wow! Parking up we grabbed our swimmies and walked along
the long and mostly deserted beach where we had a long 'swim' amongst the big waves that were rolling in that day. Although it started off with completely blue skies, the clouds did start to roll in and when we were in their shadow it got a bit cold so after a swim and a lie on the beach we went back to the car where we planned to go and look for another bay.
On our way back to the car we spotted a couple of Kangaroos who had made their way down to the beach, so we went over to see them. They were pretty friendly and didn't mind us being there allowing us to get right next to them, we stayed with them for quite a while until they decided they had had enough time on the beach and hopped off through the carpark into the bush.
Stopping off at a little cove for another picnic lunch with a view to rival any we have had, we continued on to Hellfire Bay where we had a walk. We were being spoilt by beaches as this was yet another stunner!
As it was getting later,
we decided to go back to Lucky Bay for a drive along the beach. Technically you are supposed to do this with a 4WD car however as the sandwas pretty firm we managed to get a good way along it with Sabine's driving. Well done chuck!
Stopping again we took a walk to see if any of the Kangaroos had made their way back to the beach as they are apparently more active in the early evenings, but unfortunately they were elsewhere so we had a sit on the rocks and a chat before making our way back.
After a fantastic meal we did some packing in preparation for our early drive the following day.
