DAYS ON THE ROAD = 23
Tuesday 23rd July 2012 Today we head around the corner of Exmouth to Cape Range National Park where we will set up camp for 3 nights. This will be the first time we will be solely relying on our water tanks and battery life for a longer period than an overnighter. It should be interesting to see how well we do at trying to preserve water and how well the solar panels work to recharge our on-board battery. hmmmm!!
We fill up the two tanks (total 160L) in the caravan and take an additional 25L in water containers that we are going to use for drinking purposes and filling of the kettle. I'm going to have to think about ways to try and save us some water and have an alarm in the shower especially for the old boy!!!! LOL!!!!
We're all packed up ready to go when we go across to the kids parks to find that a whole bunch of kids have decided to play "let's bury thongs in the sand!" and guess what, it's my youngest daughter's thongs that they have buried and now cannot find. Great. I then get all the kids
to start digging in the area that they think the thong is buried and they look really enthusiastic 'NOT' to help me out and start digging like snails. We're not going anywhere fast, I then think that I should leave and be down a pair of thongs. Brainwave...... I then say "the person who finds the thong will get an ice-cream" and oh my goodness they we're digging like it was the last ice-cream on the planet. Within seconds the thong was found and the young boy was rewarded with an ice-cream from my freezer. Other mums were watching and having abit of a chuckle with me.
We're finally off, we pop into the Information Centre to pick up our annual pass to the National Parks of Western Australia where I promptly receive a phone call from the caravan park we had just come from asking whether my daughters knew the whereabouts of another child’s thong that was supposedly buried in the sand. The dad was apparently fuming that it couldn't be found. Should have used the ice-cream trick!
We arrived at the Osprey Campground approximately an hour later and setup camp (site 17). This is a beautiful
campground with your own beach which we were looking forward to jumping into. We were really happy with our site and made sure we used the site to the best of our advantage, facing the van so we could watch the sunset.
After Charles' run-in with the dump toilets at Galena Bridge we were expecting much the same for the dump toilets in this campground and were ready to make our daily deposits in our own toilet in the caravan. However, upon investigation we found that these toilets were extremely clean with a bucket of disinfectant for everyone to use after they had done their business, plus they were cleaned by the camp host daily. Very impressed. Just thought I would put that in, just in case anyone was going to stay at this ground. 😊
We then head off to the Information Office in the park which we had passed on our way in to see what the area had to offer and then the girls where at our heels to go swimming so we didn't want them to be disappointed so we headed back home to jump into the ocean and cool off. arrrrrhhhhhh nice.
As the sun was starting to set, a local kangaroo decided to join us near our van and much to our excitement saw that she was carrying a joey in her pouch. The joey was just as inquisitive and kept popping its head out. Daddy kangaroo was also visiting that day which was just a joy to watch. Needless to say the sunset was a glorious one.
We were all really good at conserving the water when we had our showers that night, even Charles, we would turn the water on, get wet, turn off, lather up, then rinse, then out. Very quick. Not the showers that we're used to but definitely very environmentally friendly. We also setup the 12v power to our TV so we could watch movies at night which we also used to light up the van, another power saving tip.
Solar panels seem to be working well and we go to bed that night with 3/4 battery remaining and ready for the first sun the next day to start recharging the battery. We go to bed with the side ends open on our van so we can hear the ocean and see the stars.
