Me and my catch!
huge 8kg Trevally Hi All
these weeks are just flying by - another week and another few towns in western australia. Arrived in Broome and it's lovely weather. Got ourselves sorted at a nice campsite and booked in for a few activities - camel rides at sunset and deep sea fishing!!
Broome is really nice - went out for a few drinks in chinatown and met some local pilots who are great craic. there was a great live band on so we just had a laugh and mingled with some other ozzies and tourists. laura and i are always a bit sceptical of men hanging around on their own in bars looking to start a conversation but we met some nice people in the end. One young guy told Laura she was so beautiful that she should be Miss Universe! nice compliment but he looked about 14! not that she would be interested anyway.
Cable beach in broome is a cool place to hang out and look at beautiful people - the girls are all slim and gorgeous and the guys have very buff tanned bods! When we were getting out our van a photographer approached us and said he wanted
to take pics of us posing by our van so Laura and i did lots of bond style poses in a car park with people thinking we were crazy! Apparently he's going to try and get the promotional gig from Wicked campers and use us in their promotional material - i will be famous yet!!
We couldn't wait any longer to check out Johnny Depp in eyeliner again so went to see Pirates of the Caribbean 2 which was good fun.
Tuesday was a day for relaxing on Cable beach and our camel ride - had a really fun time. our camel (jimmy) was a young cool kinda guy but the camel behind me (ollie) decided to try and nibble my knees from behind so i got a bit freaked out but then found it hilarious. There was no spitting but a bit of moaning from Ollie behind me (mostly because he had 2 heavy people on him i think!). At night just had a few drinks at the camp and a microbrewery with our canadian friends Mike and Dave.
We had to get up really early on wednesday to go on a fishing charter. laura and
messing about
on the beach at sunset i both fancied trying fishing as neither of us had tried it before. It look pretty complicated at first but soon got to grips with the rod. We had a good group of guys on our tour and they seemed to be catching loads of big fish really quickly but laura and i couldn't even get a bite - the fish were being sneaky and stealing the bait somehow without us knowing! Eventually we got some bites but alot of the fish were a bit small to keep (small for game fishing is about 18cm!).
the guys caught some impressive stuff - a 4kg coral trout, a 5kg cod and loads of mackerel, spanish flags (sea perch) and snapper. The owner was out on the boat with us and he snagged a 6 foot shark!(which of course went straight back in). Just before the end i had caught 6 fish but was slightly disappointed at not catching anything big and then i got a huge bite! I spent about 5 minutes trying to reel in something extremely heavy that did not want to be caught. After moving to the other side of the boat i had to put on
a silly thing round my waist which helps you to balance the rod and not hurt you when it digs in (very fashionable as you'll see from the picture!). Eventually i reeled in the fish and it was a WHOPPER!!!! The captain of the boat helped me pull it on board and took my picture with it. It was still alive when the picture was taken and i had to stick my whole hand in it's gills to hold it which was disgusting (worse than baiting the line with squid!) unfortunately this fish (an 8kg Trevally) isn't very good for eating so we just had to chuck it back in - saved from the BBQ!!! As we were heading back to shore we were lucky enough to see 2 humpback whales come right up close to our boat and they were mating, flapping about in the water so much. it was amazing to see how huge they were and get so close.
Went to see our local friends (the pilots from Sunday) and they cooked our fish for us - what a feast and it was even more gratifying knowing that we had caught the fish fresh that day!
I really liked Broome and was sad to leave as there was a big day on the Thursday with Mr Cable Beach competition and our friends Claire, Karen, Stuart and Mike had just arrived in Brrome. Unfortunately we have a timetable we need to stick to to get all the driving and sights en route to Darwin next week.
After some more driving (getting slightly bored of it now!) we got to the Bungle Bungles at Purnululu National Park. As we don't have 4 wheel drive we had to take a day tour into the park with a tour company. It started at 5.30am and didn't finish til 7pm! We had a great day though and saw loads of cool stuff - Echidna Chasm was was created by an earthquake, cathedral Gorge and the actual beehive domes which gives the Park World Heritage status. the tour group was quite different from the usual people that have been on our tours - there was no-one under the age of 65 apart from us. This normally wouldn't bother me but they wittered on alot and moaned a fair bit at the tour guide that they couldn't hear, he was walking
too fast etc which got pretty tedious.
We had to spend most of the weekend at a roadhouse in the middle of nowhere so we could access the park - it's an aboriginal community so there's no alcohol and nothing to do whatsoever - will need to have a big night out in Darwin methinks!!
