30/3/08 Days 1-10
So then the last days in oz. I got in to melbourne at about 7am and got a taxi to St Killda, i had to hang aroung till 10 to get a hostel, my first thoughts of Melbourne are not a patch on Sydney, but we'll see and its freezing here aswell, which is'nt a bad thing i supose as it's getting me ready for New Zealand...everyone's got woolie hats on and walking around in big duffel coats. After i checked in i just chilled out arond the hostel that day...start exploring tomorrow i think.
I've now been in Melbourne 5 days and my opions have'nt change, i mean its a nice city dont get me wrong but unless you have got loads of money to go out to fancy resturants and drink alll the time there is just nothing to do here.
St Killda is nice there are all lots of cafe's, nice shops and a beach here but way to cold for the beach and its not that nice really and the water is brown.
So each day seem to persist of getting up about 12 getting the tram into town to have a look around
for a couple of hours then back to St Killda for my little pub crawl i've invented...first to the vineyard, then next door to greasy joes and then my hostel which is just across the road. The hostel im staying at is called Base and they have a chain of them through oz and new zealand, they are newly built fancy modern hostels with all the mod cons and a big bar/club which is where everyone goes. Personly i prefer the more smaller homely hostels then the big comercial one's.
The last two mornings i've been setting the alarm for 5.30 am for the champions leauge football games which has been good, then going back to bed it's been quite nice actully.
OH ye the most intresting i've done so far in melbourne is the other day i went on a tour of the Melbourne Cricket Ground or the MCG as it is more commonly known. The MCG is where the olyimpics were held in the 50's and they also play cricket, AFL and football there. The stadium's capacity is 100.000. On the tour we walked on the pitch, went round the stands, the media rooms and the changing rooms,
Melbourne
The eureka tower...tallest building in OZ it was well woth the money......also next to the MCG is the tennis stadiums (Rod Laver arena) where they hold the Austraillan open, that was quite cool to see aswell.
Iv'e met some really fun people whilst i have been at base and the next day about 10 of us went on a tour of Melbourne prison, the prison was made famous because it was where Ned Kelly spent some time before he was exicuted. The prison closed in 1991, they then demolished half of it and made the other half in to a museum.
Come the weekend I spent it partying....well i had to leave OZ with a bang...so just some random mad nights out with all the crew.
My last day in Austrailla i had booked a trip to the Great Ocean Road, which is a long stretch of road that hugs the coast line. The first stop was Bells Beach which is one of the most famous surfing beaches in the world...i've allways wanted to visit that beach since i saw the movie Point Break.
The beach is not that amazing but its down to waves from the southern ocean that makes it so famous, it is
all so where they have the worlds sufing championship.
We stopped about every hour at different points along the ocean road, one of them being, now i dont no it personally (which the others could'nt beiive) was the light house off the kids tv show round the bend or something like that (since i wrote this i've rememberd the name: it was called round the twist). I dont no because ive never seen the show but the others seemed to be impressed.
It was a nice lighthouse though and the views were spectacular.
We stopped for lunch in a nice little town called appolo bay. Our last stop on the GOR was the 12 Apostiles....they were amazing to see if you could get past all the japenese with there tripods taking 12 shots of the same picture...they love a photo the japs do. Got back to Melbourne at around 9pm so it was a long day and a lot of time spent in the coach but it was a great day and the weather was perfect aswell. The only thing is, it would have been better i think to do it over 3 or 4 days in your own car,
that way you get to spend a lot longer in the spots instead of being to a time schedual.
Had my last night out in OZ with all the guys....its been emotional.
Im actually really sad to leave OZ now its been a amazing 3 months and loved every minuite of of it thinking back now, bring on New Zealand as the saying goes "your here for a good time, not a long time"
