Day 3 (6/11/16) Up early to take Deb to her white water rafting experience. Temps below zero, hands & ears frozen before the sun started to thaw things out.
While Deb was rafting, went & fished the Mitta Mitta River. Water running way too fast. Access to river limited & unable to cross it to fish the better areas due to depth & strong current. High winds also a huge challenge to enable casting with any accuracy. Saw fish, but none saw my net!
Returned to pick Deb up at 2:45PM. Finally they returned at 3:50PM. Deb thoroughly enjoyed the white water rafting experience. The scenery was out of this world. And who should happen to fall in going through the rapids? Deb of course! There always has to be one! Rafting Australia were extremely professional & are highly recommended should you wish to undergo this experience.
Back to the van for steak & roast veggies so that the old girl could rest her sore muscles that she never knew existed. A couple of wines followed by lots of snoring!
Day 4 (7/11/16) Woke to the noisy, inconsiderate people next to us packing
up. Common courtesy seems to be a thing of the past these days. At least now there is golden silence! Extremely windy today, so the washing is getting done. At least it wont take long to dry.
Went to the Cuckoo Clock shop in Omeo. A brilliant display of cuckoo clocks that have the most intricate carvings & working. Well worth a visit. The only trouble is afterwards all you can hear in your head is cuckoos!
Had lunch at the maligned Hilltop Hotel. Cant say it was bad at all. $10 fish/chips/salad & $12 steak sandwich on Turkish bread & chips was bloody good value.
Came back to fish the Livingstone River. Another 10” Brown Trout whilst dropping his 15” heavyweight brother was mixed emotions. Shortly after copped a flying lure in the face, embedding one hook into my left cheek. Just as well I always wear glasses when fishing. It was a huge adventure to try & get the hook out, given where it was embedded. Several drinks later over brown trout for dinner & the pain was gone.
Day 5 (8/11/16) Went for a trip up to Taylors Crossing. Got
2/3 of the way there to find that Parks had closed the road. Not happy Jan! Saw a blue tongue lizard & an 8’ brown snake on the way back. Had to drive around through Benambra to reach Taylors Crossing from the other side.
Passed through Benambra on the road to Corryong before taking the dirt road turnoff. After breathing in loads of dust (cough cough) we finally arrived at the widest river crossing in the Victorian alpine area.
Walked across the suspension bridge with great views up & down the Mitta Mitta River. Water was extremely deep & the ford can only be crossed in late summer once the levels subside.
Returned back to the van for yet more fishing in the river. 100M walk from the van to the river makes this a great location for fishing. Landed a 4” rainbow trout, followed by two 4” brown trout, all released, followed by a nice 11” brown trout that became dinner. No shortage of fresh fish so far this trip.
Spent the rest of the night with a group in front of the fire. Deb had run into someone she knew (whats new???). That woman
could find someone she knew on the moon!
Hopped into bed for a solid nights sleep with the heater going all night to keep the chill out.
