Are things as bad as my last rant?? ....I'm glad to say that things have been looking up recently and I have been doing bits of work here and there, so all ain't that bad.
Chris has been back with us for the last 3 weeks and his parents came over to Melbourne for a couple of days and took us all out to a nice St. Kilda restaurant called Monroes. It was such a wonderful thing to be able to eat proper restaurant food, rather than the sausage pasta or 2 minute noodles I normally survive on! The food was awesome and the beer was good too as we hadn't drank for a while. We all had a great night and really appreciate the generosity of Mama and Pappa Golden paying for everything and having a good laugh with us. It was also good to have some Mum and Dad banter again, not to mention a good hug from Chris' mum, haha! - Thanks Mr and Mrs Golden!
Matt and I decided to go out after the meal as the beer had taken control of our senses so we went to the bar Chris was working at called HonkyTonks where
after some pole-dancing we, for some reason, towards the end of the night everyone seemed to drop their trousers??? Who knows why? ah well it was hilarious!
Anyway back to more serious matters. I mentioned in my last blog was that I was going to Candy Bar to drop my CV off to the manager called Will (another contact given to me by Joe at 'Bambu') who I went to meet at 5pm on Sunday the same day as we went for a meal with the Golden's. I jumped on the 79 tram to Chapel St, to visit Canady Bar a place Joe had said was 'Melbourne-renound' and had a lot of history and a bit of a cult following. I got there and it was pretty cool and very funky like a retro clothes boutique... for those in the know it would look very at home in Afflecks Palace. Will was running late so I just sat with a Cappacino (?) and a bottle of water for 40mins. When he arrived he was very apologetic and went straight behind the bar, poured two beers and then took my out the back to have a chat. He was a
really cool guy and said how the team working there was like a big family and there wasn't much of a heirarchy as he wanted everyone to be on the same level. He also mentioned that it was more about having fun behind the bar so the customer then in turn had fun. A similar philosophy I enjoy so much about P&P; if the bar staff are having a good time so will the customers! I said this to him and he loved it! brilliant!
After a good chat and some witty banter he asked if I could work the following Sunday, but "if you don't mind working then... it's a gay night" No worries I thought. I'm sure this will cause much amusement with Matt and Chris! #I'm gonna take you to a gay bar, gay bar!# haha!
As I also mentioned in my last Blog I had spoken to the manager of a bar called Trader Bar to work on the door doing a guest list for a 21st birthday party. So on Thursday I arrived at Trader Bar at 7pm and Darin (manager) showed me around the, at the time, empty bar and how things worked
the pants down party
well framed to keep our dignity! etc. etc. I wa sthen introduced to Adam the bar manager who said I'd be on the bar for the first couple of hours, which was cool. The party began to arrive and the bar began to get pumping which was cool and I was finding my feet behind the bar. It's called Trader Bar because it has a quirky price system whereby above the bar are a load of TV screens with all the various drinks listed on them and like the stock exchange the prices fluctuate depending on what beverages are being purchased more often, so if everyone is drinking Gin and Tonic for example then the price of Gin and Tonic will rise adn vice versa. Then at certain random times throughout the night the stock crashes and all the dirnks are $4.50. So everyone swarms to the bar and it all goes a bit crazy. Luckily the screens are linked to the till, but it means you never know how much anything is??! so you always have to put it in the till first to find out the price. At 12am Adam asked me to go and watch the door to make sure no-one else came
St. Kilda shipwreck
Apparently it was put there for the Commonwealth games??! in, so I just sat there wrapped up in my winter woolies for 2 hrs... easy money! I then helped do the clean down and then was offered another shift on Friday night as one of the floor staff couldn't work, more money and cash in hand, brilliant!
So I then worked Friday night which was really good and a good laugh with both the customers and the bar staff. It's not a really loud club, it's quite a relaxed bar (until the price crash) so you are able to talk to customers which is cool. One of the girls working there, Kim, then asked if I'd cover her shift on Saturday night to which I was very grateful, so that was more money under my belt again cash in hand so at least the rent is covered this week! Saturday night was also good fun and we had quiet a few shots etc. which always perks up the night and Jager-bombs; Jagermeister dropped into half a glass of Red Bull. It lead to a pretty cool night on the bar and I was pretty drunk by the end of it, brilliant!! the worst thing about 'Trader Bar' though is
that they don't have cleaners to do the floor so we have to do everything! Which means cleandown takes about 1 1/2 hours, which is ridiculous!!
It was then Sunday, each day prior I hadn't got out of bed til after 2pm as I hadn't finished work until about 4/5am and Sunday was no different. Will phoned me and asked me to get to Candy Bar at at 7:45pm so he could show me the ropes around the bar. They ahve no dress code behind the bar so I was just in jeans and t-shirt which was pretty cool, though I don't really want to get my nice clothes runined by bar work and alcohol, never mind?! He gave me an info-packe tour of the in's and out's of the bar all fairly straight-forward. It began to get busier, with more men than I'd like to see in one place but I guess that would be expected with it being a gay night 'n'all! I worked away serving as I normally woudl and had no problems with the till or the way the bar worked and by the end of the night Will said he was seriously impressed. And
the other bar man, Benny, said if I wanted a job here I've pretty much got it as he too was impressed with my bar service and skills, excellent! Finally some recognition!!!! haha!
We sat back after a very quick clean down, the easiest bar to clean down ever and had a few jugs of beer and he said he would chat to the other manager and see how many hours he could offer me, I'm after 30+ hrs a week ideally, they have day shifts availabe as well so lets hope that goes well?!
Saturday June 3rd - I have had more shifts offered to me at Trader Bar which is cool so have been working there getting the cash in, haven't heard from 'Candy bar' yet but will phone them next week! working at Trader tonight, going well and enjoying working there!
I have recently come down with a stinking cold but it's ok becasue the other day we bought 'TopGun' and a double disc 'Old Skool' and the amazing and now quoted constantly 'Anchorman' - so our quiet nights in are full of laughter or full of admiration for the quality film that is TopGun!!!
