Going to the Chillis
Reuben, Mike, Me and Tim on our way to see the Red Hot Chilli Peppers with our good friend Mr Canadian Club Unfortunately we couldn't bum it around Australia for the whole year and so we have ended up in Melbourne to try and get ourselves some work. We caught a Qantas (which apparently stands for Queensland And Northern Territory Air Service) flight down to Melbourne from Alice Springs. It was pretty nifty and we got to watch the new Rocky film and got a free meal which we didn't expect. We arrived and the first people we saw were a couple of spasticated tramps asking for a few dollars for a burger... unfortunately we had both just run out of cash. We check into a hostel near the town centre to find out that we had arrived in the middle of the Melbourne Grand Prix weekend... only the busiest bloody time of year for tourists, so all the prices were high. To make it worse we couldn't get anywhere to stay on the 2nd two nights so we ended up tramping it up in the hostel TV room that the night porter said we could have.
After the weekend was over everything calmed down and we eventually got ourselves somewhere to stay. We moved into a hostel called Nomads which is

Me, Tracey, Reuben and Elenor walking around aimlessly one day after we went to a couple of random galleries pretty modern and has loads of facilities. Unfortunately the main one is the bar and with something going on down there every night, it was hard to stay away.
The first night in there we entered in the 'Killer Pool' tournament to win a $25 bar tab... obviously i won it and so that sorted us out for a while. Everyone in the hostel seems to be doing pretty much the same as us (looking for work) and everyone is cool.
For the first couple of weeks we went round town handing out CV's into every possible bar and pub and signing up for all of the job agencies. We seemed to be getting no where and at the same time we were trying to find a flat or share house to rent for a couple of months to save cash.
We looked round a couple of houses out of town and we said that we would take them, but for one reason or another they kept getting let out to other people. Eventually we both found jobs in bars.... Tim is working cash in hand in a bar called the 'Waterside Hotel'- it has a claim to fame that
Possum Feeding
Well and truly tamed in the park near our hostel it used to be home to one of Melbourne's biggest gangs and that 'Chopper' has thrown someone through a window there. I am working in a bar right in the centre called '3 Degrees', it is really nice and although sometimes i have to start work at 8 in the morning, it doesn't ever stay open much past 1am so there's still time for a few cheekys after.
if you want to see the place, the website is:
3 DEGREES We have both been trying to work as much as possible for the last month and are saving up to move on, hopefully by June, to either New Zealand or Sydney.
Anyway, about Melbourne- it is the nicest city we've been to so far and it's called 'the Worlds Most Liveable City'. That might be right, as its the first place that I thought I wouldn't mind moving to. Although it isn't really that hot (mainly because its winter), there are still days where it gets as hot as the summers back home. There is a really complex travel network of trams and trains all around the city and out to the suburbs that make it easy to get
Performing Possum
Tracy making the possum work for a bit of bread and honey around. The taxi's are absolutely useless... it is the only place i've ever been where you have to know the way to the place you're going to, or have to read a map for them!!! There are loads of places that you can go out to at night and at the moment the comedy festival is on for a month. Every night at most pubs across the city there are comedians on from all round the world. We haven't paid for one yet but may have to soon because the free ones are absolutely gash.
The other night the Red Hot Chilli Peppers were playing in a park in the city. We couldn't afford tickets so we just went up to the perimeter where we could here quite well. There was people trying to gatecrash (not very sucessfully) and people up trees trying to see. It was a good laugh and at least I can say I went to a concert, even if we just saw fence!
I will probably write the next blog about how things are going in a month or so and hopefully get some more pictures of the city.
