What a splash!
Appreciate the photo it took a while to catch the wave in action This travel blog has been a long time coming but with so much to see and little time to see it we have been kept very busy. We arrived in Melbourne excited after all the good things we have heard about the city and have not been disapointed. We spent a week in Melbourne while we waited to pick our campervan up. We spent our first few days near the city centre in the Oasis YHA.
The ultimate English backpackers night out in Oz was on the Monday night we arrived and we took the the tram down to St Kilda where we were to spend our night in the Elephant and Wheelbarrow getting trollied and meeting the Neighbours crew. I have to admit that i was a little embarissed as i qued to enter but when we got inside everyone was there for the same reason and 2 and a half hours later (and a lot of vodka consumed) Toady, Steph and Dillan came out to have photos and Party with us. It was a really cool night and even though i didn't win the best consistent dancing competition that i had given a very good attemp at i
Mind the Penguins
Penguin Parade Carpark had a really good night and met some really nice people.
After a couple of days in Melbourne we thought we'd head to the beach for a few days so we took the tram and headed to St Kilda. St Kilda is a great seaside town within Melbourne and i loved the place. We stayed in Base Backpackers Hostel which was really nice and spent 2 days at the beach trying to pick up a bit of a tan. We watched the sunset in the evenings and had a few really nice relaxing days before heading back to the centre of Melbourne to do some more sightseeing.
We took a tour to Phillip Island where you can watch the tiniest penguins in the world coming out of the sea after sunset and running across the beach and up into their burrows. We spent the day on the tour and before arriving at Phillip Island we stopped at a small wildlife park where we got to see our first kangaroo and Koala. We got to feed the kangaroos which was cool but kinda gross as they slobbered all over my hand and there were so many crazy annoying flies
Umm Yum
My first encounter with a kangaroo buzzing round my head attcking my eyes and mouth as they tried to get moisture. The next stop on the tour was at a winery where we got to taste some wines, unfortunately it was mostly red wine but me and Gaz managed to get through them. After a walk along the beach and some wallaby spotting we headed to Phillip Island for the penguin parade. We upgraded our ticket and were saved a special area on the beach so that we could see the penguins better and im so glad we did there was five of us in total and we had our own ranger who told us all about the penguins, we went down onto the beach just before sunset and took our seat on the sand to watch the penguins coming out of the water. They were amazing and there were more than 1000 of them that came out in small groups. They come out after sunset as it is safer for them and they were so cool. They would creep out of the sea and then if it was safe make a mad dash across the beach and up onto the bank. Some of the penguins
Jo in Ramsey Street
Gotta love the cheesiness! would get scared and dart back into the sea for safety. Paying the extra money meant we could also go up onto a boardwalk and see the penguins walking up the hill to thier burrows. They were literally half a meter away and were so incredibly cute. I wanted to put one in my bag but unfortunately they weren't included in the price.
We spent our last day in Melbourne on the Official Neighbours tour we we took a tour bus to 'Ramsey Street'. It's not actually called Ramsey Street and is much smaller than it looks on screen, there are actually only 5 houses on Ramsey Street. When we arrived we were given a complete rundown on the street and who lives where in the show. Crazily i recognised a girl i met while at Ramsey Street who actually went to Croydon High, such a small world.
We were to pick up our Wicked Campervan on Monday and were quite excited about our roadtrip to Adelaide across the Great Ocean Road but i was sad to leave Melbourne as it is a great city with something for everyone. The public transport in Melbourne is amazing and makes
Does it really need a title?
Anyone recognise this place? London Transport look pathetic. The trams go all over the city. Me and Gaz couldn't seem to get the hang of them though and spent many a day and night lost in the streets around our hostel trying to find the right road. For some reason we kept getting off the tram at the wrong stop, one night we had to resort to getting a taxi because we got so lost after getting off the tram, i blame it all on Gaz!!x!!
While in the state of Victoria i have really noticed the affect global warming is having on the country. Victoria is having a major drought, infact half of Australia is in a drought. Most of the waterfalls have dried up as well as the lakes, rivers and streams. Trees that are hundreds of years old are dieing because of the lack of water and there is nothing they can do, people are no longer allowed to water the gardens, wash their cars and showers are restricted to a few minutes. It has really made me more aware of the problems that humans are causing and that i have little concern about when back home in England, now i have seen the problems it is causing i am going to try much better to help the environment from now on.
