We decided to take a closer look at one of Melbourne’s oldest tourist attractions, its Jail (or Gaol as they spell it!). The first part of our visit was a tour of the old police cells with a guide playing the role of a police officer. We were then split into lines based on gender and then locked in cells, although only for a few minutes. We were shown the different cells that they used to use, including a padded cell for those they thought might harm themselves, and the very small exercise yard. We walked around the old prison buildings and found out more about Australia’s notorious criminal Ned Kelly and his family. We were also shown and told about how they used to tie inmates to a device for whipping, and learnt about those that used to do the hanging.. many of whom were criminals themselves.

After a lot of walking we both had aching legs, so we headed home for an evening on the sofa.
