Off on an adventure! Early on the 1st, Danae, Dana, and I headed off to see the Great Ocean Road, a scenic road along the south coast of Victoria. It is the most scenic road in all of Australia, and is a very popular tourist destination. We rented a car for the trip, so we could go along at our own pace.
Some random stops along the way: Geelong, so Dana could have her picture taken outside the Ford plant (apparently she loves Ford). We also hit up Torquay to see the surfers and browse through THE HOME of surfing gear - Roxy, Billabong, RipCurl - this is where they started from! A Torquay highlight was definitely my $5 fish and chips which were AMAZING. Another random Torquay highlight was when we drove past a group of guys in their 20s chasing butterflies! Dana burst out laughing at them and they ended up piling into our car, asking for a ride to the surf lifesaving club where their cricket team was training.
We also stopped at some popular surfing spots like Jan-Juc to check out the amazing views and surfers.
Another highlight was stopping by the side of
the road to see KOALAS in their NATURAL HABITAT!! Seeing koalas in the wild is definitely not as common as seeing kangaroos, so this was a rare treat (even Danae had never seen it before!)
After a loooong car ride along some crazy driving terrain, we made it to the highlight of the Great Ocean Road - the 12 Appostles. They're these crazy big rock structures jutting out of the ocean. Take a look at the pictures. We had a nice time looking at them, then heading to the beach to chill out with them.
Lorne After the 12 Appostles we headed back onto the road - we were staying in Lorne, which was a little ways back, and we wanted to get there before dark because the kangaroos come out at dark, making the road dangerous. And this is especially bad when the road is windy, and has a huge cliff face on one side. We had to drive a little in the dark, which was VERY scary, but we made it safely to Lorne. We first stopped at the local grocery store to pick up some stuff to make for dinner, then headed to the quaint
Ford plant rules
They're quite strict! My favourite: 'No unauthorized personnel e.g. friends and family' Great Ocean Road YHA hostel. We got the 'family room' which had a double bed and a single bed. Getting to the room involved climbing up a very steep ladder - something which was especially hard with our luggage.
Lorne was FREEEEEEEEEZING that night and we were all pretty exhausted from the early morning start so after dinner we curled up into our beds. We were planning on going out to see the exciting Lorne nightlife, but alas we fell asleep.
The next morning we went into Lorne for breakfast in town. After filling our tummies we headed to Erskine Falls to see a pretty waterfall and some amazing forest.
Heading home On the way home we stopped in Torquay again for lunch. Dana had this craving to go surfing, and was considering renting a surfboard and wetsuit, but in the end decided not to. I really didn't feel like getting in the water, and neither Danae nor I were very good surfers.
We headed back into Melbourne and Danae and I went back to St. Arnaud's.
