The beautiful chef The campsite is at Fusina a crummy port that looks over the lagoon to Venice.we got there quite late and it was foggy the next morning we woke up to a most beautiful red sky and the floating town looming in the mist.We hopped on the ferry so excited ...Its hard to unravell the superlatives for this place its like nowhere else on earth.I am currently reading the city of falling angels..john berendt who makes the town and its people come alive. The ferry landed and we raced to the acedemia bridge over the grand canal and stood there gobsmacked for sometime..its an awesome sight ..the gondolas.the churches, the little bridges, the eerie singing of the gondoliers as they row people around the canals..only the asians at present they must be loaded...no one else can afford the gondolas. We did this for 4 days every day taking a different path...walking everywhere..to santa margerita and on to the rialto market ..the rialto bridge and down to st marks square..then thru the alleyways back to academia. One day we came upon a rally in a piazza by the communist party..there were lots of police with riot shields but it was all very peaceful and friendly. We heard that
day there had been a shooting in our san lorenzo market in florence..a racist had murdered 2 singalese bag sellers then shot himself under the food market. We caught a ferry twice up and down the grand canal to look at the tired palaces that once belonged to the rich but now struggle to live up to their grand histories...with a bit of fantasy you can imagine it. Venice is still expensive for accomodation but we found lots of little cafes giving value for money. We saw inside a lot of the churches that are free but we dont pay on principal fo the ones that are not.
It was very hard to leave...but I am still reading the book and venice still lingers.

SOOOO Jealous !!
Hi Jill & Denis Venice sounds absolutely magical, even allowing for the sense of decay & lack of upkeep in some areas. Your descriptions of things are stunning. Where will you be for Christmas? XX
