flying to tazzie
view of melbourne Day 27 AFter a short flight in the afternoon we arrive in Tasmania. Luke has hired a car and we drive to the hotel, which is basically on salamanca street in Hobart. The scenery and mountains are beautifuls with Mt Wellington looming in the distance, we can see this from our apartment! Done a little shopping and had a wander around before heading to the spa for a dip! We go for a drink and sample the local beer before heading to an Indian restuarant. Good meal, treied a few new dishes. Wander back agong to the irish bar to watch a band and drink some more.
Day 28 Early rise to walk two steps out our front door to Salamanca Market. The place in buzzing and full of different stalls and music acts. We wander along and stop to watch some great and some not so great buskers. Jump in the car and head to the Huon Valley. The car journey was great, scenery was beautiful. We arrive at Hastings for our cave visit. We stroll through the rainforest, have a look at the natural spring then join our tour guide. The 45 minute tour is spectacular, absolutely beaufitul
rock formations and all natural. Afterwards we drive up Mount Wellingotn. We get out to take in the views but not for long as it's so windy and cold, there's snow everywhere, but the views are first class.
At night we head for a drink then look for somewhere to eat. We stumble across a greek restuarant which is busy so we book that for tomorrow night. We find an amazing italian and have yet another lush meal. WIll have to be on the slim fast shortly. Feeling a bit tipsy we head back to apartment for blethering and drinking.
Day 29 Another earlyish rise to fit everything in. Drive to Port ARthur includes some stop off points. Firstly is the tessellated pavement which looks man made but isn't. We carry onto the blow hole with wave crashing off the rocks to create this effect. the Tasman arch and the Devils Kitchen are amazing cliff faces with the ocean roaring below.
Port Arthur next, we wander round the museum and learn about some characters the had been shipped over here and why. We join a guided tour learning about the jail and colony here with some stories. We take
a 20min boat trip round dead mans island where bodies are buried, and the isle where the younger convicts were kept away from the men. We wander round some of the buildings including the church, the governers house and the jails themselves. Wonderful place its so amazing that they have managed to get back some buildings for this national heritage site, you can imagine what it was like here all those years ago.
Another spa dip when we get back then out for greek. Having never properly tried greek food we throughly enjoyed sampling lots of dishes, the staff were great and friendly. The calamari was a firm fav. back to the apartment to polish off all remaining alcohol!
