The Beach in Robe
Saw a seal swimming about too but too fast for the camera!!! 29th November 2008 - ROBE FESTIVAL
We arrived at Robe at around 10.30am. Some of the roads were closed off for the fair but we managed to park down a side street near the entrance. That would be our spot for the night!!!
We expeceted to have to pay a fiver or so to get in but when we saw the entrance fee of $88 we almost fell through the floor! So much for a cheap week!!! As we were there we decided to pay it anyway and promised ourselves we would get the most out of it. It was on from 11am until Midnight and so we had a whole days worth of fun to have and there were live bands playing all day (some of which are really famous in Oz apparently) so really it was more like a mini festival than a village fair. It also advertised free unlimited rides so we thought we would go on those a dozen times to get our moneys worth!!
We paid and got our yellow wristband before having a wander about. There was a big beer tent, food stalls, ice cream stand, stage area, childrens craft centre, craft shops
and stalls, mini golf and some rides!! The rides were disappointing though as they were all for children and there was no way I was able to squeeze by bum into one of those go-karts......though after paying $88 I was tempted to try!!! There was no fudge stall either....gutted!!! The beach was just through the beer tent and was gorgeous to look at. We saw a seal swimming close to the shore too. It was a shame not to get in the water.
We watched 'Huckleberry Superjam' first for a bit. They were pretty good and I was impressed! We then decided to go to the kids craft centre and paint a boomerang using aboriginal symbols. I aren't the most artistic so I just picked the easiest symbols but it didn't look too bad in the end. I could always use it as a boomerang as well so well worth getting creative!!
We then went to line up with the kids for our faces painting. We had to get our moneys worth somewhere!!! We both had an English flag on one cheek and an Australian flag on the other. How patriotic!!
From there we had an ice
After having our faces painted!!!
Its a freckle party on my face!!!! cream, just missed out on taking part in the wine challenge and watched another band...The Bondi Cigars. We sat on the grass for a while in the sun. The sun was lovely and warm but the wind was bitter so a bit of a mixed day. Still...at least we didn't get rain!! I heard the lady next to me tell her daughter to come speak to me....."Go say hello to that lady, she may teach you how to say hello in Swedish" I just turned and laughed as I told her I wasn't Swedish......did the big English flag on my cheek not give away my nationality?!!!
Another guy came up too to chat to us but he was a little scary. Kept telling us to be careful but got a bit too close when chatting to us. Ironic thing was he kept saying..."you're smart girls, you can spot a weirdo a mile off!" Yeah mate....and I could spot you from a meter away as well!!!
We then went for a game of mini golf, watched another band (The Badloves) and had some food before heading back to the van to layer up and prepare for the evening by
Vanessa Amorosi
Really good entertainer! grabbing our chairs. It was getting really busy now and a lot colder as the sun went down. We settled our chairs in a good spot and sat watching the next performer 'James Reyne with our first beer of the day. Loads of people had been drinking all day so everyone was really merry and really friendly. The atmosphere was great!
As it got later I decided to treat myself to a bottle of wine. I asked for Rose but it definitely had more body to it than Vanessa Feltz........looked and tasted more like red!!! Oh dear......I hoped it didn't have the same effect on me as red wine does on my dad.....Nat would have to carry me back to the van later if it did!!
Next on stage was Vanessa Amorosi. She sang a few songs we recognised and was a really good entertainer. At one point she ran through the crowd and jumped on a chair directly in front of us. Pretty cool! Everyone was up dancing and singing including us even though we didn't know half the songs!!! I also jumped and managed to catch one of the baseball hats that they were throwing into
the crowd. I donated it to Nat though as her head was cold!
The last band were a rock band called 'The Angels'. Oldish band and we were told they we an Australian band a bit like the Rolling Stones. They were good though and I had to dance to keep warm. I had so many layers on I looked like a mitchellin man!! The whole crowd were going crazy. A little girl close to us was a real little rocker using her lightsaber as a guitar. I had a lightsaber fight with her too......not really a fair contest though....she had a lightsaber, I had a torch!!!
It was a good day/night and we both enjoyed it despite the price to get in. We strolled back to the van (thankfully I was ok after the wine) and slept in the side street. A few rowdy drunken people gave the van a bang on the way past but other than that it was pretty quiet!! Pretty cold as well thought and I was glad I had a sleeping bag!!
30 November 2008 - LEAVING ROBE!!
I woke up feeling relatively fine but took a couple of paracetemols anyway
Stage Area
It got busier later on!!! to ward off any pending hangover. The beach toilets and shower were inside the road closed off for the fair so we could't get in till after 8am. Once the gates were open again we trundled down to them in our pajamas....not the best sight I assure you!!! I braved a cold shower and once we were both relatively clean we set off on the road again to Mount Gambier!!
