I arrived in Adealide and was met by my Uncle, Nigel and his cousin Jane. Nigel and my Mum had come over from the UK earlier in the morning and Mum was back at another cousins house as she was pretty tired.
Before I go on further, Adelaide is where the majority of my Mum and Uncle's extended family live. The majority of them came over around 1967 so there were some members of the family my Mum and Uncle hadn't seen for over 40 years !
Unfortunately the jet lag didn't really agree with my Mum too much and she wasn't too well. But I knew the family visits over the next few days would sort that out.
On the Friday (18th March) we headed over to Lorna's. Lorna is another of Mum's cousins and we had dinner there. This was also the first time my Mum and Uncle got to see their Aunt. Aunt Pam, who also came over in 1967 to Australia hadn't seen my mum for a very long time, it was a great moment, one that I will remember for a very long time to come. We sat and chatted, my Mum recounting
old times back in Kent when they were all still together.
Saturday was the bg family BBQ at Jo and Stuart's place in Eden Hills, just on the outskirts of Adelaide. We met a lot more family here inclouding Roe, another of Mum's aunties and her children and grand children. The house out here was great, it was very long and had steps going down to the lounge level where it was very open plan.
Out in the garden was a pool where I was dared to get in, it was pretty hot this day (unlike the other days in Adelaide) and so I jumped straight in. We also got a glimpse of a wild koala chilling out in the trees after eating a whole load of eucalyptus leaves 😊
After the BBQ, Aunt Pam came back to the house in Adelaide with us. We went to Mount Lofty on the Sunday (20th March), something that I had been dying to do since I got there. As some of you know this is my nickname, so I had to get the obligatory shot of me outside the information centre, also as the weather was closing in on
Adelaide and it was getting very wet indeed it was therefore all my fault ! hahaha.
On the Monday, we took Pam back to where she lives in a place called Mannum which is right by the Murray River. We picked up another one of the cousins - Bill. He is a tow truck driver and had been at the Clipsall race in Adelaide the weekend before. He also went over as part of the Australian crew to the Korean Grand Prix. It was really good to meet him, we got on like a house on fire straight off the bat. A very warm and kind bloke.
In Mannum we went down to the river Murray to check out some of the paddle boats that were moored there. Bill knew one of the drivers of the boats, affectionately called Biggles, and he invited us aboard and showed us around the Murray Explorer. We then had a spot of lunch and then headed back to Pam's for tea. This was a cue for Mum and Nigel to say their goodbyes and we headed back via Bill's place to Adelaide.
On the Tuesday (22nd March) we went and met
Anita (yes you've guessed it, another cousin) and Graham. They live in North Adelaide and are a bit closer to the city centre. This gave us a chance to have a look around the shops and look at the various architecture that Adelaide has to offer. After sitting on the pigs (see the photos) we headed back over to Anita's place where Mum and Nigel had a chance to chat about old times and what they had been up to since they had seen them last. Graham also showed us a book he had written about his famly history. It was very impressive, detailing over 6,000 members of his family right back to his roots in Germany.
Back in Adelaide the next day Mum, Nigel, Jane and I headed off to check out a wildlife park but unfortunately the weather was totally against us. So we only managed to get a sneaky photo of a kangaroo, it is here, but the fence was about as much in the way as possible so we headed home. We also stopped in to a German/Australian town called Hahndorf where a shop had some interesting signs up which you should be able to
see on the photos here.
Adelaide was great, and it was good that we got to see virtually all of Mum and Nigel's extended family. It was also a nice insight into Australia and what was to come for me.

Australia
Hi thanks for your post on Adelaide. I’m currently trying to get Australia holiday ideas for my next annual leave. I originally went backpacking Australia and decided that I loved it. I’m now staying in Sydney but still try to see the rest of Australia when I can. Adelaide looks really nice. The water looks really clear. When backpacking Australia I really enjoyed the Whitsunday islands. The water was beautiful and the sand was the whitest sand I’ve ever seen. Mission Beach is an Australia adventure spot, where I did sky diving. The Outback was very cool. I absorbed a lot of the culture and was a true Australia experience. This is a useful site where I get a lot of Australia holiday ideas: http://www.nothinglikeaustralia.com/ca
