Admirals Arch
Ben looking rather fetching in the lovely warm weather - NOT! Right, got to Adelaide yesterday and the jury's still out on what we think of the place! It was an ickle bit stressful driving in after lots of wide country roads with nothing to see apart from great views to then drive into a city with traffic lights and beeping cars certaining made me freak (esp as I was the one reading the map!).
Had two nights on Kangaroo island weds to fri and had a very rough crossing across (I felt quite sick). This however was nothing in comparison to the drive from the port, Penneshaw to our hotel in a place called Kingscote. We'd got to the port at night so it was very dark - maybe this doesn't seem to bad to all you city folk but there are very few lamposts on the island so we had a 30 mile drive along VERY winding country roads with a road sign every 10 miles or so with no light, looking from side to side trying to dodge any jumping kangaroos (luckily we never saw any but it was a real possibility!). I'm sure you can imagine how freaked out I was, even Ben was leaning so far forwards
Pelicans
Prior to feeding - weird looking creatures! while driving I thought his nose would've touched the windscreen at one point!
Our hotel was a bit manky which was a shame as the other hotels on the road trip have been fab and we had two nights in this one. There was a funny smell which got so bad I had to go down to reception in the end. On the plus side though there was a laundry room so we were able to do some much needed washing!
We had a full day on the island on thurs and it really is a beautiful place. We first made the trip to a place called Seal Bay where you could see wild seals ans sealions on the beach just chillin', eating and generally 'having a laugh' with their mates. It was lovely!
Then we moved onto a place called Kellys Caves which was a series of underground caves (we went to the open one that you didn't have to get around on your belly!). We were the only people on the 12.15 tour which I think our guide 'Veronica' found a bit bizarre. She didn't talk too much about the caves in the end, just let us look
Ferry ride back to mainland
Not looking as green as going across! around and talked a bit about living on the island e.g. the drought for 7 years (didn't even know Oz was going through a drought with all this bloody rain we're having!) means they are only allowed to have 60 second showers and that water has to then be used for washing their clothes! There's no crime on the island - there's three police, one's always in training, one's always on a day off and one's always on duty - MAD!
After this we went on a koala walk and saw about six koala bears sleeping in the trees - very sweet. We also saw som wild kangaroos and while driving there we had to stop for our first two kangaroos bouncing along the road. One stared at us for ages and as I phaffed trying to sort out the camcorder Ben just stared back saying 'Ello Roo'. I couldn't understand why the stupid camcorder wouldn't work and when it bounced off I'd realised I hadn't taken the les cap off (stupid cow!) - I was NOT impressed with myself!
We went to a National Park called Flinders Chase and saw a rock formation called Admirals Arch it was amazing
to look at and had more seals just chillin' out around it - fab!
We then had to leg it back to Kingscote to watch a pelican feeding session which was the most hilarious thing I'd seen! Definately worth the $6 for us both to watch - they're greedy little buggers! We had time to leg it back to the hotel, wash some clothes and then leg it back out again for a night time penguin walk. We saw lots of ickle pengiuns (about 35 cm tall) that come onto the beach every night - very cute. Unfortunately we only got crappy pictures as we weren't allowed to use a flaslight but it was a lovely experience.
Just after the walk we had another stress. Benjamin took his rather fetching poncho off and lost the lens to his glasses. Now this shouldn't have been a problem if the cheeky chappy hadn't sat on his glasses a couple of days earlier and boken them then! Luckily we found a supermarket and bought a cheap screwdriver kit and he pathched them up. This time it was a bit more of a serious problem (we couldn't even find the lens at first let
Giant Lobster
Can't remember the name of the town but guess waht they're famous for! alone the screw) and all I could think about was 'I don't want to drive onto the ferry, on the windy roads, into Adelaide etc! Luckily a nice lady found the lens and Ben set to work fixing his glasses. This involved him sacrifcing one of my most favourite pairs of sunglasses so he could take that screw to fix his. I was gutted but it was obviously worth it as it meant I didn't have to drive to Adelaide the next day (and he's promised me he'll buy me another pair - keep reminding him if he doesn't!).
The ferry ride across yesterday was a little rough but nowhere near as bad as going over. Last night we came across lots of young 'hoodies' so naturally I was a little freaked out. I'll reserve judgement until the next blog. Going on an excursion tomorrow into the Barossa Valley to lots of winneries incl Jacob's Creak, hopefully won't get too sozzled!
Off to Perth on Monday to stay with Ben's sister Lauren. Hope the flight is okay - it's Qantas! x
