Since arriving in Australia the weather for us has been very hot however further along the coast it has been raining so much some areas have been flooded and impassable. In many areas it hasn't rained much for nearly six years so at least some of their water dams are finally filling up at last.
It was in Hervey Bay that we encountered some of the rain. As we walked along the longest pier in the world the rain pelted down so much for a minute we thought we were back home in England! We didn't do too much in Hervey Bay, Fraser Island had been battered by bad weather and from some of the news reports we had watched the place didn't look too well so we gave it a wide berth.
Next on the agenda was Brisbane and after a lovely 8 hour bus journey we arrived feeling a little worse for wear. The weather hadn't improved much either so we headed out to Fortitude Valley to find our motel.
City Palms is a cheap motel on the outskirts of the CBD and was quite good value for money if you could see past the drunks
Skippy
The Kangeroo I Choose To Stroke Looked A Little Annoyed.. and adult shops. As with all our Australian experiences more often than not it seems that we get shown its worst playing cards first and only after a while do we find out where the nicer places hide.
Brisbane is quite a small city; the CBD is compact however you can spend hours walking around in circles down the grid system of streets. Once we had managed to escape the maze we walked around the Botanical Gardens and board walk along the waters edge just in time for the weather to start getting muggy and hot - for a change.
We weren't particularly looking forward to the 2 hour train journey out to Beerwah to visit Austraila Zoo but we felt we had to make the pilgrimage. Getting up early when your travelling is easier said than done but we hauled ourselves to the train station at 7.30am.
On our courtesy bus from the train station to the zoo we were informed that just the other weekend 8500 people attended the zoo in one day. As we arrived it didn't look as though there were many less trying to get in.
There was a really heavy,
Crikey
Terri Teasing A Crocodile sad atmosphere that hung over the park throughout the day, maybe because of the many views of Steve on posters and videos all around the zoo.
The midday performances were held and we got to see Bindi perform her singing and dancing followed but Terri and Wes with the crocodiles. Graham the crocodile was out that day and was the one that bite Wes on the bum not so long ago and nearly killed him.
We support Australia Zoo in their aim for wildlife conservation but we felt to constant reference to someone that has passed away was a bit spooky but saying that we both really enjoyed the day, the zoo was very unique in their teaching approach about animals.
