Fraser Island
Dingoes chasing the car We cruised into Hervey Bay after a short stop in Bundaberg for lunch. The pool kept us entertained for the afternoon with Finn impressing us with his swimming. He is so confident in the water and is really a little fish. The following morning the boys were treated to a visit at M & K Model railway (seen on Burkes Backyard). The guy who ran it gave us a glimpse of what Jack would be like if he continues his train interest into his 60s. Interesting. It was however an excellent display with over 1000ft of track. The only problem was getting the kids to leave. A day trip out to Platypus Bay on a large boat rewarded us with spectacular views of the west coast of Fraser Island. The migrating southern Humpback Whales were amazing and even with a day of relatively flat water the whales were quite active. The following day we put our camper into storage and headed out to River Heads to catch the vehicle barge to Fraser Island. We had booked the journey about a week prior and planned to stay at Fraser for 5 nights. For those of you who have been following our blog
Fraser Island
Another dingo since we left, you will know that our trip has been pretty smooth. Well that was about to change. We did enjoy a quick trip to the island and a great drive through the central lakes area to our first camp at Central Station. By early afternoon the rain had begun to pour. The ground quickly turned to mud. The boys quickly turned to mud monsters. The rain continued all night. Paul and I know this, as we were awake all night due to a deflating airbed and a leaky tent. We managed to pack up the tent between showers and moved onto our next camp by the beach at Dilli. Being on the beach it was super windy and still raining. We tried an afternoon beach drive but the sea was so stormy and the rain so hard we couldn’t see much. It was recommended that we stay in fenced campgrounds for the kid’s safety from the dingoes. We had also spoken to the boys about staying close by us in case of dingoes. Unfortunately some juvenile dingoes managed to find their way into the camp. When Jack saw them he started to panic and got into the car
Noosa
Paul kayakking in the Noosa River to hide. Finn copied him and soon was in the car too. So Paul and I did what any responsible parent, camping in the rain with dingoes would do. We sat down and had a beer. After another wet night in our little tent and reports of 200mm rain expected in the next 24hrs we decided to see if we could get off the island earlier. We drove up the beach to Eurong and phoned to the ferry company to secure the last spot on the boat. As we sped (at a maximum of 30km/hr) across the island we felt relieved but also sad to be leaving. We didn’t get to enjoy all Fraser had to offer, so we would have to return in the future. (Maybe on Paul’s next dream - sailing around the country.) Returning to Hervey Bay we were so happy to be home to our dry, cosy camper. We spent the next day drying out our tent gear and planned to leave the following day. Finn surprised us with a morning of vomiting. Could our week get any worse? Thank goodness it didn’t. We enjoyed reasonably good weather for the rest of the week. We had

Jack in tree a short drive around to Tin Can Bay to see the endangered Indopacific Humpback dolphins. They come in early every morning for a feed in the bay and tourists line up to drop them some fish. The dolphins and the ducks impressed Finn. Jack spent the morning playing with a non-English speaking Dutch boy! We also drove out to rainbow beach. Unfortunately the low tide was too late in the evening so we couldn’t do the beach drive. We did take the walk out to The Carlo Sandblow and enjoyed climbing on the massive dunes. Our last destination for the week was Noosa. We stayed on the river and were entertained by the pelicans harassing the fishermen for scraps at the filleting table. Paul had the opportunity to get out on his surfboard a few times but the conditions weren’t that great. A drive up to The Laguna Look out gave us a great view over the waterways and beaches. We also spent a morning at The Eumundi Markets. For any one heading this way, these markets are definitely worth a look at. Some friends drove up from Brisbane and met us for a picnic lunch by the river. The

pelicans waiting for a feed weather was superb that day. We had spent the morning kayaking and splashing about, so a leisurely lunch was the perfect way to spend the rest of our last day in Noosa.
