Today we had an early start at 7am as we set off on the two hour drive up the coast to Eumundi markets. Once I cleared the one way systems of the city, and noted the four police cars in under an hour catching people speeding, it was a long straight drive….. 100 Kilometres of long straight road in fact! But with the cruise control on and the music going it made the drive more pleasant.
We arrived, seemingly in the middle of nowhere, though we could see the hundreds of tents all set up in fields. We parked up, and set about exploring. One small area of the market was a permanent fixture, all with the individual stalls inside, we browsed around looking at all the wears and I felt fully refreshed and awakened after some homemade ginger beer…it was very nice and fiery. Across the road…well track really, was a sea of tents and stands. The market had exceeded my expectations, the majority of items were professional handmade things and items varied from jewellery, clothes, wood, furniture, pottery and art work to amazing glasses made out of old drinks bottles as well as food stands, drink stands.
I was quite restrained, but at the end bought myself some earnings and some cute little cotton shorts to wear to around the house as it’s just too hot for denim. Rowena bought a few bits and Matt wasn’t overly interested, so didn’t get anything, but he enjoyed the food stalls.
After the markets we headed over to Noosa Head. It is famous in Australia for being a posh area and has an amazing beach. As it was the middle of the day we headed into the Surf club (basically nice pubs which are in every town) for lunch and some shade. We ate our lunch and enjoyed some ice cold cider whilst watching the tennis on the television. We all got rather engrossed in it and after the match finished we headed out onto the bright white beach. Considering it was the weekend, a hot sunny day, and the middle of the school holidays I thought it would be really busy, but it wasn’t. We picked a spot, sun creamed up and settled down for a few hours, enjoying a nice refreshing swim in the sea once you battled through the breaking waves, and then headed home.
Unbeknown to me, Rowena had organised to look at some chickens on the way home that she had seen advertised, so half an hour from home Matt took a detour so we could view them. The family were moving to a small holding but didn’t want to take them. As the chicken coop is now all finished straw had already pre-purchased and they were the type of chicken Rowena wanted, she took them…..all 7 of them. Catching them was a tad interesting - the rockviler who was a nice puppy, but decided he wanted to get involved sent a sea of chickens flying in a mist of feathers and ear piercing squawking.
Eventually with the dog locked inside the man and Rowena caught them, as Matt held the garden bags open for them to be put in……I could say that I played the very glamorous and helpful assistant….this however would not be true. I just stood there chatting to the man’s wife and holding the money…..what can I say, they look like they had it all under control without my help!
Matt and I snuck the bags through the house with the dog only cottoning onto what was
inside at the last minute, charging after us as we reached the front door. Luckily the wife caught the dog and held it back while we shut the door, apparently they had a few more chickens originally that were now no more due to the dog. With the chickens in two bags stowed safely in the boot we headed home.
Rowena was very very excited to move the chicken coop into the garden, fill it with food and water and put the chickens in. Once suitably cooed over and admired by us all, we headed inside and had an early night…well after I pranced round in my new shorts for a while J
