We’ve been having a great time around Noosa. Yesterday we went in early to get our great parking spot in the shady car park near the beach. The heavy seas earlier this year did a lot of damage to the beach and the boardwalk but they’ve pumped a lot of sand onto the beach and the boardwalk is being rebuilt. We enjoyed walking along the beach, sitting watching the passing parade, then looking through all the nice Noosa shops. We finally got to celebrate our anniversary with lunch at a beachside restaurant; I had spiced Algerian duck with a sweet jus, spinach, ‘wilted’ of course, and polenta and pistachios, all quite delicious.
There were about six spits of rain early this morning which soon fined to a lovely, if hot and humid day. We drove to Eumundi markets, always great with lots of things to tempt. We spent a fair bit of time at the markets, though it was very hot and very crowded - I came away with nothing, Doug bought four punnets of strawberries which we’ve been eating ever since - Queensland strawberries are so delicious!
We thought we’d drive then into the mountains where it was
Noosa Beach
not much surf running sure to be cooler so drove through the Mary Valley to Kenilworth. It is such a pretty drive, though the poor people who live there have the threat of the damming of the Mary River hanging over their heads, if the government ever makes up its mind. It would be a tragedy, such a beautiful, lush valley; although it was the driest I’ve seen it this time.
After Kenilworth, we drove up the steep mountain towards Maleny. Queensland drivers are different, we’ve had them pass on the inside, drive across us and then turn right, pass us on a busy corner as we’re turning, road rules to them are merely a suggestion, it seems - definitely cowboys on the road. So we hardly turned a hair as a driver passed us on the double lines, nearly hitting another car coming the other way, until we heard the police siren coming behind us. A police chase! The car was speeding and weaving up the hill, passing everyone on double lines and outrunning the police. We expected to see him being booked when we reached Maleny, but instead saw one very frustrated policeman. There was a lot of road work and
weekend traffic so no doubt the chase was called off before someone was hurt. I was wondering what was waiting for the driver once he went down the other side of the hill, the book thrown at him, no doubt. Such an idiot.
We enjoyed all the towns in the mountains - Mapleton, Montville and Maleny - then went down once more to the coast. Coolum Beach is having a kite festival this weekend. We drove there but, being later in the afternoon, the place was packed. We could see all manner of kites being flown on the beach, although smoke from bushfires doesn't make for good photos. Maybe tomorrow we’ll go and have a good look. We went back to Noosa and watched the kite surfers. I had a dip in the river to cool off and now we’re back on our site, with air conditioning and cooling drinks to bring down the temperature.
