While Nicki and I were waiting for the tour bus, another girl came along, and was also being picked up for our tour. Her name is Letitia, and she is also English. So the 3 of us got picked up as planned, and the rest of the tour people are lovely. They'd already been on tour for 2 days be the time we started, so had driven up from Sydney already. So apart from the 3 of us, there are an older couple who were told it was a 5 star tour of 40-60 year olds by their travel agent (you can imagine how much they're enjoying themselves!), a Greek guy who's about 45-50, 2 German guys around 25 (not travelling together) and the rest are all girls travelling alone (apart from 3 Spanish girls travelling together). All the girls are 18-28ish, but I haven't told them how old I am yet. I'm fitting in fine so far! So we drove to Rainbow Beach, where I was put in a room with 3 Swedish girls who are lovely, Kathryn, Romy and Maxi. We all spent the night in the bar and the next morning were picked up by a 4wd bus
and driven to Fraser Island. We went on a 10 minute ferry ride (on the bus) and then drove along the beach for 20 minutes or so. Along the way we came across a turtle (I'll load photos when I can) and then arrived at our accommodation, Eurong Resort. I was in a room with Romy and 2 english girls who are not on our tour. We dumped our bags and had lunch (all you can eat buffet) and drove to Lake Wabby, which is a fresh water lake in the middle of the island. We walked 3kms in on sand in the sun, so couldn't have been more happy to finally get there! We all swam and got sunburnt, then walked back out to the bus - yip, another 3kms on sand in the sun. From there we went to Central Station, which isn't a station anymore. After another 3km walk along a creek we were pleased to get back to the bus. We went back to the resort for dinner, and then Kathryn, Romy and I walked to the beach to see if we could see any dingos. Sure enough, one came trotting along the sand towards us.
We took some photos, expecting it to stop coming at us. It doesn's, so we broke the dingo rule and ran away! You're not meant to run away, because they chase you - but its much scary standing your ground to a dingle than you think its going to be! Anyway, we weren't far from the electified saftey fence that surrounds the resort, so we threw ourselves through the gate and took more photos of the dingo which was waiting for us on the other side of the gate. Not much of a surprise that we were all in bed by 9pm. Breakfast was at 8am and then we hopped back on the bus and drove to Lake McKenzie, which is another fresh water lake. It was beautiful, with bright blue light water near the shore then dark blue/black about 30 feet from shore where it drops down to 12 metres. Anyway, we swam and lay on the beach, but the weather was a bit showery, which suited me fine. We then headed back to the bus and drove back to the resort for lunch. After lunch, back on the bus, along with 2 pilots. They were offering flights over
the island for $70, so me and some others hopped of the bus and went flying on little 14 seater planes. We took off from the beach, and flew over the island and in circles over the ocean looking for sharks, stingrays etc. We landed about 15mins later on the beach, and ran back to the bus to keep heading north. We got to Indian Head and climbed up the cliff face (it was really an easy walking track, but makes it sound better!) where we could look off the end and look for sharks etc in the water. Such a beautiful view. After that, back in the bus and drove back to a shipwreak. More photos, then back on the bus. We stopped again and Eli Creek, where we walked up the creek on a walkway and waded back to the beach in the creek. After that, back in the bus a back to the ferry - going through the incoming tide as we went. We had a fabulous time on Fraser Island, which is the largest sand island in the world. We're now back in Rainbow Beach, heading to the Town of 1770 tomorrow.
