Well, we survived Auckland. Mainly due to a free trip that got us out of the city and I have to say New Zealand is beautiful, so we're looking forward to going back in Jan.
The Rainforest was the first port of call.
Had a brilliant day, driving through the rainforest, going to a Wildlife Sanctuary where we got to hold a Koala (tick) feed Kangaroo's (unexpected tick) and stroke a baby Crocodile. Saw some breath taking views and went for a walk along Cape Tribulation Beach/ In the rainforest. Here our tour guide-who looked suspiciously like Steve Irwin and was called Steve- proceeded to pick up a large red ant with a green bum and bite the bum off. When he uttered the words, you try it, I couldn't resist. I'm like a child in such situations, I have to do it. So after a rather long chase with an Ant I picked one up and licked his bum (thought biting was bit cruel) and it tasted off citrus, really strong.
So yer I've licked an Ants bum (tick!?) plus had one nibbling at my thumb as it tried to gain freedom. Stupid Ant.
We stayed in the
Rainforest one night in a hostel which was in Cabin type things. It was an....experience, lets just say that.
We may have eaten Kangaroo steak that night. Had to be done (tick) but felt a bit bad after feeding some that day.
Its an interesting moment when your laying in bed early in the morning listening to the down pour of rain, your bladder ready to burst, wondering if its worth the run to the toilets which are ridden with bugs.
We've managed to pick up the French guy who was in our 5 bed dorm as our little puppy. He's been in the same hostel in Port Douglas and now here in Cairns. Chloe was suspicious as he dared to ask her questions until we realised he was just trying to be friendly.
Anyway, I digress.
The second day in the Rainforest was less fun as there was an awful lot of rain (yes I know, its a RAINforest) and due to our sudden realisation of our lack of money and the expensiveness of Australia we went Exotic Fruit Tasting simply as it was the cheapest thing to do. They were all gross.
So, any life lessons
learnt already?
A) Don't look.
Anyone who's stayed in a hotel etc with me knows I can be a bit OCD with cleanliness. My eyes always revert to that mark on the wall, my stomach turns at that hair in the bath and my skin feels a bit itchy when sleeping on those sheets which are more cream than white. However, I've suprised myself. Staying in all these far from clean hostels I've been absolutely fine. And thats simply because I'm not looking. I know they'll be dirty so whats the point. I only noticed the amount of gross orange and brown stains on the carpet in Auckland when it came to taking my shoes off and I decided it might be best to keep them on. Plus we're sleeping on top of the beds rather than in them. No, its not being precious, its being clever, its hot anyway.
B)Don't expect everything to be like the pictures/ perfect.
I learnt the things will go wrong thing with the flights but now me and Chloe have learnt not to be dissapointed when things are not how we expected them or how they're supposed to be in the pictures/films. The
rainforest is supposed to be misty and hot and littered with animals right?
Don't get me wrong we're having an amazing time but we've just learnt to be realistic. (I can hear my Dads voice)
Anyway, this has been enough of a novel....

Licked vs Liked
Did you really mean you liked an Ants bottom or did you mean to say Licked. Both are wierd but one is definitley worse than the other
