Our trip to cairns has been a great first taste of life in Australia. The scenery is stunning, the wildlife is amazing and the weather is extreme to say the least- varying from the recent Cyclone Larry to sunshine. The people are all friendly and laid back, even the local bus drivers are nice and helpful!

Cairns is a real tourism hub that offers loads to see and do. We have Scuba dived on the barrier reef ( still not seen a shark!) , visited the cairns tropical zoo and enjoyed chilling at the free esplanade pool. As we are staying with relatives North of Cairns we have taken the opportunity to visit the northern beaches and the beautiful Port Douglas. Another fantastic day trip was spent touring round the tablelands west of Cairns that contains rainforest, bush scrub and farmland. We have seen some stunning waterfalls and had a look around a few to many tourist shops.

The wildlife is fantastic and i enjoyed feeding the Kangaroos at the local zoo. I was less pleased to be attacked by a parrot in the bird enclosure. The little bugger pecked my ear, teeth and bit my finger and stubbornly resisted any efforts of mine to be removed from my shoulder. I was not amused as the photos show!

We also enjoyed visiting the Tjapaki aboriginal park that is an interactive dance, singing, spear and boomerang throwing sort of a place. Here we gained an insight into some of the difficulties faced by local aboriginal people since the white settlers arrived. I also discovered that i was a dab hand at boomerang throwing!

Whilst here we have been spending time with my cousin Ailsa's new horse Chester. He is a cute horse who is always keen to get to his food. I have also been beaten up by my cousin Ewan whilst attending his local Tae Kwan Do class. He is the new Bruce Lee!!!!

Thanks to Jill, Colin, Ewan and Ailsa for a lovely time in Cairns.. We will miss you all!
