So tame.
The beautiful pelicans at Burrum Heads. Well, now we are the east coast and heading down there is so much to see and do I don't really know where to start.
From Rockhampton we went to Lake Monduran and Trevor enjoyed a day fishing on the huge lake with a fellow camper we met, he was fishing for Barramundi but sadly it was sausages for tea that night, again !!!
Next we made our base at Hervey Bay and travelled out from there. We had an interesting visit to the Bundaberg Rum Factory
with a tipple at the end of the tour, only a small one mind you!!! The beautiful places we visited are almost too numerous to
mention so I will just pick out a few with the reasons they were special.
Maryborough was fascinating, the town is clean and settled on the banks of the Mary River. It's main attractions for me was the lovely bronze statue of Mary Poppins, it is situated outside the old bank where the author P.L. Travers was born and the town celebrates its "Mary Day" once a year when townsfolk dress up in the various costumes made famous by the characters of the famous film. The beautiful gardens beside
Mary Poppins and Marilyn.
The famous Mary Poppins statue at Maryborough. the Mary River provide a tranquil and cool relief from the heat beneath the tropical Queensland trees. One tree really tickled us, it was the Sausage Tree and has
literally hundreds of enormous seed pods hanging from its branches that look just like bloated sausages. We had to photograph
our friend John beneath the tree because he could be described as a sausage fanatic, that and pies but we have not seen a pie
tree to date.
We stayed at a caravan park by the marina in Hervey bay, the high rise condominiums are so spectacular, and expensive of course but
with perfect views.
The Boat Harbour RSL club proved another superb dining spot, overlooking the spectacular Frazer Island and the South Pacific Ocean.
Ever since coming to Queensland I have wanted to view a typical Queenslander house, and saw the one of my dreams in a Real Estate book but of course did not want to waste the agents time thinking we were in the market to buy it. Then we spotted a house called
Brooklyn which is open to the public. Well, it was out of this world, many huge rooms all furnished in the style of the
The sausage man.
So realistic but not edible unfortunately. period, wide
verandahs all the way round to catch the breeze, 12ft high ceilings all ornate, the majestic stairways leading up from the tropical
gardens to the many front doors, with the gardens full of the most tall splendid palms. We enjoyed the most tasty lavish devonshire cream tea and a guided tour and learned of the history from when it was built by an early English settler until the present day owners.
On returning to the car I opened the Real Estate book again only to find that the house we had just viewed was the same one that was
for sale. Bingo !! If only we were 25 years younger I could picture us buying it and making a Guest House out of it, oh well we can dream.
A visit to Burrum Heads was made fantastic by the many pelicans on the beach and we were able to stroll amongst them, then they
all took flight before our eyes. A nearby fisherman had problems trying to land a huge turtle which had snagged its shell on his hook.
Woodgate will be remembered for the many kangaroos out during the day. They were laying on the front porches
The rum twins.
The big bottle at the Bundaberg Rum Factory. of houses just like the
family dog.
On leaving this area we stopped at a massive market held in aid of Animal Rescue, the fruit and veg were of tropical proportions.
Sadly the animal rescue centre is closed at present due to lack of volunteers, I wish this facility was in Busselton as I and many of our
friends would be very happy to donate some time.
More later...............
