After leaving Dino and Lee in Bahrs Scrub we then went to Australia zoo, glass House Mountains and then on to Maroochydore, to get a new awning fitted, after the old one got ripped off in South West Rocks. We stayed here for a few days and really enjoyed the caravan park we had set up in, right on the banks of the river (beauty mate). At this point ben is still in Melbourne spending time with family, as there were a few family celebrations he couldn’t miss out on.
Maroochydore is an urban centre on the
Sunshine Coast,
Queensland,
Australia. At the 2011 Australian Census the urban area recorded a population of 47,645.
Maroochydore is a major commercial area of the Sunshine Coast with most shopping precincts located in the central business district. It is home to the
Sunshine Plaza shopping centre and the Sunshine Coast's major bus interchange for
TransLink services on
Sunshine Coast. Maroochydore is also a venue of major surf sport carnivals, and is a popular holiday point from which to travel the rest of
Queensland.
The name
Maroochydore comes from the Aboriginal indigenous Yuggera language word 'Muru-kutchi', meaning
red-bill: the name of the black swan, commonly seen in the area.
Maroochydore is the sixth town mentioned in the original (
Australian) version of the song "
I've Been Everywhere".
The town of Maroochydore was subdivided from the
Cotton Tree reserve by Surveyor Thomas O'Connor in 1903. The land was acquired from William Pettigrew who had a timber depot at what is now Wharf St.
Australia zoo was Amy’s one requested place to visit, she loved it. She got her photo taken with a crocodile and then got a cuddle with a koala. Unfortunately the Irwin’s were not there on the day we went. The bird show was absolutely brilliant, they were so well trained they didn’t skip a beat.
Australia Zoo is a 100-acre (40 ha) zoo located in the
Australian state of
Queensland on the
Sunshine Coast near
Beerwah/
Glass House Mountains. It is a member of the
Zoo and Aquarium Association (ZAA), and is owned by
Terri Irwin, the
widow of
Steve Irwin, whose
wildlife documentary series
The Crocodile Hunter made the zoo a popular tourist attraction. The zoo is run by Director
Wes Mannion.
Australia Zoo was opened by
Bob and Lyn Irwin on 3 June 1970 under the name Beerwah
Reptile Park. Their son
Steve, had helped his parents since childhood to care for
crocodiles and reptiles and to maintain the growing number of animals in the zoo. In 1982 the park was renamed to the Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park and the area was doubled with the purchase of another 4 acres (1.6 ha). Steve and Terri changed the name of their now growing wildlife park to Australia Zoo. As filming generated extra funds, Steve and Terri put all money raised from filming and merchandise into conservation and building new exhibits.
Australia Zoo won the Australian Tourism Awards for 2003–2004 in the category Major Tourist Attraction. In 2004, the Australian Animal Hospital was opened next to the zoo to help with animal care and rehabilitation. More recently, the zoo was a finalist in two categories for the 2010 Queensland Tourism Awards.
Visitors will see a wide variety of birds, mammals, and reptiles, and can view crocodile feedings, hand-feed elephants, and have hands-on animal encounters.
