We boarded the bus at Hervey Bay around 9am to take us to Brisbane. It was a pleasant enough journey. We arrived in Brisbane bus station and went to the train terminal to take us to Hawthorn. When we got off, it was about a half hour walk to our hostel- Riverside. It was in a residential area, and we arrived there about 3pm and met Mark- the manager. Riverside was basically someones house. There was a huge TV in the living oom where two lads were playing Call of Duty, a galley kitchen, two computers and a basement. After he showed us around and introduced us to his hairless cat (yuck!) Mark showed us our room, which had it's own little terrace and a huge TV. He advised us to keep the terrace door closed at night because possums get in. It would not be nice to wake up to a possum in your room! We dropped our bags and chilled out for a couple of hours- making the most of the free wifi and catching up on emails.
About 5pm, we took a walk down towards Oxford Sreet, where there were loads of restaurants and shops. We walked
all the way down to Bullimba where we checked out the ferry station so we could get it the following day. We then made our way along the promenade that runs along the waterfront. After this bit of exploring, we ade our way back to Oxford Street and hit "Grill'd"- an Australian burger chain that does amazing burgers (but not as good as Ferg's!). After dinner we went back to Riverside where Dave decided he was going to finish off our Machu Picchu blog (finally!). While he did that, I did the laundry. I went down to the drying area to hang up our clothes and discovered that the drying area was also the smoking area. You'd know a man was running the place.
The next morning we made our way down to Bullimba, stopping off at the bakery on the way for some cakes and coffee. We got the ferry up the river to the city and wandered around a war memorial park, with lovely gardens and statues dedicated to Australians who fought in all the wars. We took some photos then called into and i-site. The lade suggested we go through the Botanic Gardens, head across the

This statue was dedicated to all the nurses who looked after soldiers in past wars. river on the pedestrian bridge and walk along the South Bank. It was a great way to while away the afternoon. The Botanic Gardens were beautiful, but alot was closed off due to a festival they were setting up for. We had a stroll though then made our way across the bridge, stopping to take a few photos. We sat on the grass on the South Bank, reading the paper and snacking. There was a huge wheel similar to the London Eye, but we didn't go on it! We walked all along the South Bankbefore crossing back over the river on another bridge, and found Paddy's, an Irish pub who were doing $15 meals. We called in for a pint and a feed, and about 8 we headed back to the ferry station to head back to the hostel. We watched a movie on our giant TV when we got back.
The next day, we said goodbye to Mark and got on our bus to Byron Bay, which was only 3 hours. Although there wasn't much to see in Brisbane, it was a nice city and a great place to wander around. We enjoyed the little break!
