Flew in to Uluru (aboriginal name for Ayers Rock) on Friday lunchtime and checked into our hotel, The Lost Camel. Great views of the rock on the flight in with not a cloud in the sky, nice and warm during the day but cold at night. Ginnie has been suffering with a cold so as we couldn't get to the Rock that day, Ginnie took to her bed in the afternoon and I got to sit by a pool for the first time on this trip whilst Ginnie had a snooze. Went to a BBQ that evening, where you get to pay for the privilege of cooking your own steak (or Emu/Crocodile/Koala (only joking about the Koala, but everything else was on the menu!). Ginnie still wasn't 100%, so back to the room for an early night to make the most of Saturday as we had hired a car to get to the Rock and to the nearby Olgas. Another beautiful day on Saturday, so picked up the very expensive hire car (60 GBP for a day! - By the way, everything is expensive at the Ayers Rock resort - you are the ultimate captive audience with no alternative destinations for
300 miles in any direction!) We put on our walking boots and drove out to the Olgas, a range of massive boulders (up to 500m high) for a walk around with a view to going to Uluru afterwards to walk around the base of the rock(about a 3 or 4 hour walk).
However, this is where it gets painful, on the way down on the walk through the Olgas I did something to aggravate my lower back and we had to abort the trek, trouble was we were over 30 mins down from the car, so that meant a 30 min hike back up a rough trail with pain in every step! That was the end of my hiking, and we managed to drive around the base of the rock, with Ginnie getting out to take a few shots and explore a little whilst I stayed in the car (in quiet agony!) Back to the hotel and laid out on my back, we soon established (about 4 hrs later) that it wasn't getting any better with rest, so had to call out the Royal Flying Doctor Paramedics!!!! Drugged up to get through the night, we went to the doctors
on the Sunday morning who gave me more drugs to get on the plane back to Cairns on Sunday afternoon! So all in all, it was a terrible shame to be at such a geographic Icon and not really get the chance to explore it, especially given the expense to get there!
Anyway, a few pictures attached and off to Sydney on Monday for some Physio and more drugs!
Proxima parada Sydney!
