24-8-09 We went into town & did some grocery shopping, tried to catch up with the guy that sold us the Satellite dish, but no luck . Left for Victoria River 195 km away & set up in the Road House Caravan Park , $20 a night. It was very hot 38 deg, we left the girls in the Air Con & went to see the old Victoria River Crossing . We had asked the lady in the Road House weather it was safe to swim there & she said it was safe if you kept an eye out for crocs. We arrived & you needed a 4 wheel drive to get to the crossing, once there we walked the crossing & decided to sit in the small rapids & keep our eyes peeled. We did not see any crocs & had a great avo in the river & cooled off. We went back to the van & Den went for a walk down to the bridge & the river , it was too hot for me. I took the girls for a walk & got tea, Den was ages , it did not surprise me “have-a-chat” was talking to a
fisherman. We then went up to the pub & had a drink (yes another pub, cant miss one). W had tea & had an early night.
25-8-09 Left early for Timber Creek & I drove the 90 km for a change. We booked into Timber Creek Caravan Park $25 a night for two nights, it is very hot again 38 deg . At the Servo Gas was $1.22 a litre & petrol was $1.65 we had enough to get us to Kununurra so we hope its cheaper there. We got settled , put the air Con on & decided we would cook up a storm, as the WA border you cant take any fresh fruit & vegs over. That took a while & after lunch I posted the new blog & then we went for a swim in the park pool & then came back to the van & it was happy hour. We rang Mike & Rob & had a chat & then went down to the river at the park as they feed the fresh water crocs at 5pm every night. It was cool watching them feed. Back at the van it was tea time & then
I caught up on the diary & watched TV.
26-8-09 Today I slept in , it was much needed. We headed off to see Timber Creek & grabbed a map from the shop, first stop was a few km out on the highway & then by dirt Rd, Policeman’s Lookout which was next to the Victoria River . A pretty spot with about 6 vans free camping there which was not allowed, but they were having a good time. On the way back we took another dirt track down to the River where it looked like it was a regular fishing spot the water is a lovely green colour. We headed back to the highway & went down further & turned left to the Timber Creek Lookout & Nackaroo War Memorial. The road to the lookout was pretty narrow & steep & we kept going higher & higher. We came to The Nackaroo Memorial which was interesting & across from it was an picnic area that you could watch the sun set & camp there as well, maybe next time. We went up to the lookout & you could see the town below & all the mountains surrounding it.
On the way back down we got a pic of the Victoria River. Next stop was Edmund Bridge that is this “new Bridge to nowhere” it leads to the army base, there is gates at the end of the bridge that you cant go trough, all mysterious. Then ontoThe Big Horse Campground & boat ramp, which was a nice place to stay with a minimal fee. The water looked so inviting, but alas all the crocs might have had something to say about that . We are doing a 3 hour sunset cruise from here tonight ,It was now about 38 deg & the girls were really panting. The locals say it is about 7 deg hotter than normal. We then went on a bit further to see Gregory’s Memorial & Tree. We noticed on the way that there were a lot of Boab Trees by the side of the road. On the way in to see Gregory’s Tree we noticed this very long fence that had shade mesh up about 1/3 rd of the way, we thought it was to Keep rabbits out as there was cages every so often. Wrong , Cane Toad Deterrent that has not worked.
It is a great problem in the NT as they are killing a lot of the wildlife. We arrived at the Gregory Tree which was a 250 mts walk & I decided to stay with the girls in the air con as it was now pushing 39.5 deg, so Den walked down & it was where Gregory landed & first explored the area between 1855 & 1856 & carved his name & date in the giant Boab Tree, The site is now a sacred site with the Ngarinman Aboriginal People. We all decided to go back to the van & have our “picnic lunch” & get into the Air Con. We got talking to a few people & Den had a chat to the guy next door about tuning in the Satellite Dish as we have not set ours up yet as you have to ring up & change the location when you move states , so we will wait till we get to WA. We then got ready for our Victoria River cruise & got a bottle of Jacobs Creek wine from the pub ( $25 bucks, a case of 4x gold was $58 so we were glad we
had some supplies with us. ) Talked to Merry as she is in Red Rock NSW & having a good time 22 deg there. We got picked up in a “Troopy” 4 wheel Drive for our drive to the boat & we all boarded the smaller one an 8 seater, & took off. We saw a lot of birdlife, but sadly only 1 freshwater croc & 1 Salty, but it was a relaxing tour & ½ way we stopped for drinks & nibble’s , The sun was just setting over the water & it was amazing. We took lots of Pics & then it was time for our trip back. We arrived back in the dark & bussed it back to the Caravan Park, where we had tea & an early night. We are heading to WA border tomorrow & may have a few days at Lake Argyle, we will see. I am writing this blog at 2.45 am as I cant sleep & it is 29 deg in the van with the fan going, I guess it will be another hot one tomorrow. We will have a big time change tomorrow we will have to put our clocks back
2 hours to NSW time, So happy hour tomorrow will have to be 2pm so we can catch up with all you guys in the east. Will talk soon, missing everyone luv you guys xxx Sorry 2 pages of photos if you are interested.
