Current mood: Counting down the days and shifts!!
Well well well… Coming back to work from a great weeks drinking and Camping wasn’t so bad after all! In fact it was more like a Holiday. We rocked up a day late due to a designated day off for the Darwin Cup that I said we missed out on. No problem. So at 7.30am, I’m in the office to find that the week will consist of the usual really….. Not to much walking and plenty of digging. So that we did. As the week went by myself and Brett got to go out alone on some boundary marks and other work type things giving us the chance to hit a few cool spots around and about the island!
So from Monday to Friday I was out on me lonesome acting like my own boss which was great. I got to get out and about with Sabo and Romeo which was cool as they keep trying to teach me Tiwi which I know is literally piss taking to them guys! Every time I repeat things they both piss them selves laughing at me but I keep it up to keep those
boys happy! Anyway myself Romeo and Sabo were sent out to get some boundaries marked so off we went myself ahead of those boys leaving them to tidy up the line I was leading with! A few km’s ahead I realize I was out of reach on the radios so deciding to keep walking I got back to the car a good hour before them! Sitting and waiting I could hear scratching on the radio where it seemed they were getting closer!! Reading a coordinate out over the radio I started up the car and headed in there direction!! I was chuffed!! Out I was driving on bush tracks with no license!! At least I’m learning though ay!!!!
Catching the boys further up the road we all got back to camp in time for their weekend barge to the other island (Bathurst) where they have lived for the most of their lives! Man those guys are interesting I will be sorry to say good bye to them!
So my weekend stint on Melville was here but this time with a difference….. We were in competition with the Tiwi lads in a little Game of Cricket over at the
Me and the beast
Bretta catch that morning Imalu Tigers AFL football oval. It’s on…. We were a mix of nationalities…. My self being Brummy… Little Nicky being a Jock… Dave being South African, JJ being a local boy and the rest made up of Kiwi’s and Ozzies our ball game was going to need some focus.
Out to the bus we went where we were to find our team name was Maxwell Mopunga’s which is something filthy I’m sure. The day was so funny… our fielding was a shambles though rob made a great catch. The bowls were going sky high.. catches were fumbled leaving us bowling for twenty overs and not getting them all out….. what a laugh!!!
Next up…. Batting…. Man have you ever had a real cricket ball come at you from an out standing bowler…. Well let me tell you something…. I’d rather line up for a kick in the knackers. I mean it…… I happened to be last up in our line up as after seeing the bruises on my team mates come back I hid at every opportunity. But hiding gets us no where…… I was up and for three overs I ruled the strip hahahaha I actually made
Romeo
eating the BBQ fish fresh that minute!! three hits…. The first more of a block… the second a tap but I swear the third was going for a four but it was intersepted in the air by a thirty foot tall Tiwi bloke…. Honestly!!
So to the side line we went where would share a laugh and some food together before getting our pictures taken with the Trophy made especially for this event I hope will be kept going. Wicked times guys thanks for the Challenge….. I will be seeing you all next time for round two.
Below is a write up that was published in the Tiwi Times that can be googled when tiwi time allows it to hit the internet. anyway here it is.
Article writer: David Flemming..... team captain!
KINGFISHERS HUMILIATE MUWANIS Great Southern Muwanis suffered a crushing 97 run defeat against Garden Point Kingfishers in the first annual cricket challenge, despite the supreme bowling and fielding efforts by all, particularly from captain David Fleming and Scottish import Nicky Mitchell.
The Kingfishers batted first making 146 off their allocated 20 overs with the runs being shared throughout the entire top order. JJ Rioli playing for the Muwanis had
the Kingfishers in trouble early taking two quick wickets and was on a hat trick but failed to deliver when the pressure was on. The highlight in the field was a classic outfield catch by Rob ‘The Destroyer’ Bendon.
The Muwanis in return could only manage a measly 49 runs being bowled out in the twelfth over. Brett Stevens tried hard and hung around for a while but lacked support and with Gary ‘The Surgeon” Armstrong running out all his partners the task was always going to be too great.
At the end of the day The Kingfishers were way too classy and professional with bat and ball.
The game was played in good spirit and with Captain David Fleming already having his team back in training and with continue improvement from rookies Dave Neave and Luke Morris the next challenge promises to be a lot closer.
the end..... Back to my bits xx cheers Dave your a star son shine!! ill be needing the next write up for round two where we will be getting the trophy back!!!
After the match the weekend trickled by and the early week two days arrived where
we literally spent our time tidying up boundaries and the likes of that sort of stuff. Back to Darwin we went on the Wednesday and I spent the week in hiding not really getting on the drink to much and catching up with friends. ooooh bumped into Hannah to she looked well.
Back on the island again we got to do a bit of camping. This time we were up at Jessie creek so out of the way from the office we would work our shift to our own advantage. We get up super early to get all of our graft done before getting out on the beach to catch a few fish…… sweet…. We were catching sharks… sting ray… but man we got some wicked Barramundi and Queen fish that we cooked up lovely on our hot plates back at camp!! This is what Melville should always be about…. Work and play…. With tasty delights at the end. (Queen fish cooked in lemon and onions wrapped in tin foil over a naked flame is the muts nuts)
Enough talk of my belly... The shifts for me on Melville are slowly but surely coming to an end! After
this one I only have two left which will take me to the end of September where I will be hitting the east coast with one of my favourite people ever…. Anne Thomas!! Cant wait to see you gorgeous. The week went steady on Melville and the countdown went from three shifts left to two! This is a great feeling but at the same time a shame. On my last night on the island for the current shift I got to sit down with Sabo and catch up with him for some laughs where he was promising me pissed up Tiwi dances and crafts. I don’t reckon he will remember but would like to think I could see some of there work at least.
Until after the break guys…. I’m off home to clean the pad as the lease is running dry and I’m going to be hitting the backpackers hostels once again.
Love to you all at home enjoy the pictures as I will have plenty more for you all to enjoy.
Miss you guys…..
Love from a Brummy
