We made it safely to Darwin on Saturday after a rather hilly drive in pretty high temperatures. The engine temp. didn't move off normal (thank goodness).
Our stop at Katherine was good, with a nice dip in the hot springs on Thursday, followed by a three gorge cruise up the Katherine River on Friday. It was a very hot and humid day again, so the swim with the crocs was a welcome relief. Yes we saw about four freshwater crocs along the river bank. Fortunately, I made sure I swam close to the children, just in case there was an attack!!!!! By all accounts, freshwater crocs are quite shy (ha ha).
We left for Darwin (about 300km north) at 10.00am and arrived at 2.30pm. We stopped for a break, at Adelaide River, famous for the WWII base and later for "Charlie" the water buffalo in the Croc Dundee movie. We waited 1hr for a serve of Wedges!!! Not happy Jan.
All of the tourist parks in Darwin were fully booked but we were lucky to find a rural property on the net, where the owners had advertised for someone to park if desperate. As it turned out, the
property has power and water and is very quiet. The stars at night are spectacular, made even better, with a red wine or two. We will be here for at least a week.
Last night (Sunday) was spent on Mendil Beach, where we watched the sun set. There were at least 1000 others marvelling at it.
We are hoping to arrange a visit to Kakadu before the week is out.
