Hey guys!!
Ok so we are now in Darwin!!!
Its an awesome place, its hot and feels just like being on holiday all the time!! The bars are buzzing and everything’s on the main street so whenever you walk out your door its lively and fun!!
Me and Gem are staying in a hostel called Meleluca on Mitchell and Will and Carl are staying in Chillies across the road, so on the first night after we arrived off the Ghan, as tired as we were, it was a quick shower, and then we all met on the balcony of our hostel and had a couple of boxes of goon (and a few rounds of the “chicken game”!!
We then went exploring and found ourselves in a pub / club called the Vic. It played all my kind of cheesy music so I was loving it! After a few too many drinks Gem and I got propositioned by the staff… “Would we like to do some jelly wrestling” “why not” we thought so followed her to the back room and had to get changed into a bikini and vest top!! Along with 2 other girls we went on
our hostel
meleluca on mitchell stage where we were faced with a paddling pool full of glittery jelly type stuff!! We had to tie bands around our wrists and fight each other to get them off!! It was hilarious!! (Sorry folks back home who see me as an innocent little girl… ill get to the waterfalls and lovely scenery later!!)…
….. but back to the bar!! Me and gem had to fight each other first and to be fair it was really fun!! We just messed about and I think the crowd got more jelly on them than we did!! After 3 rounds I had to go through to the final against this scary looking, sober girl… lets just say she cheated…!!! ;-) But it was such a fun night and we certainly started Darwin off with a bang!!!
The next day, I met Carl and Will in one of the pubs and we experienced the true meaning of “hair of the dog”!!!
Then it was ‘job hunting time’ so me and gem did our usual pounding the pavements and again both managed to get jobs starting the next day… i'm working in a place called the “hogs breath café” its really
young, fun and busy!!
On Monday 2nd, Carl collected his car and us 4, along with another girl, drove to Litchfield National Park. Its one of the ‘must sees’ in Darwin and was pretty amazing. First we went to see the world biggest termite mound (ok, maybe not in the whole entire world, but in my own little world it was the biggest!!!)
Then it was to the rock pools, where there was loads of little waterfalls in between the ‘plunge pools’ the rocks were really slimy and the current was quite strong so we made our way down the waterfalls, much to the amusement of on-lookers, sliding the whole way on our bottoms!!!
We then went to Florence falls, which is a massive water fall, you couldn’t slide down this one (obviously!!!), but you could get right underneath it and to look up and see the water coming down was awesome! We sat by the edge of the pool and ate our picnic, which was lovely, and then at about 3 o clock, headed back, as gem and me had to go to work!
We stayed in Meleluca for a week, and had some fun
nights out and general shenanigans. And then we had to move hostels, so the boys changed to The Cav and we went to the YHA. The YHA was a nice hostel, we had our own bathroom in the room, which was a bit of a luxury and shared with Ellie, a girls we also met on the Ghan and this lovely eccentric old lady called Trish!
It was all going swimmingly until one night; me and gem had been out for the night and thought it mite be a good idea to go swimming!!! We jumped over the wall and got in the pool, it was all good fun until the manager told us to get out, so we chucked all our stuff over the wall and proceeded to then get ourselves over. Hummm… this proved slightly more difficult!!!
There was no other option but to follow the manager through the really busy bar, heads hanging and clothes dripping to the cheers of the late drinkers!! Needless to say we got an early wake up call the next morning, and feeling like school kids, we got told off by the woman in charge, she said we had to leave
litchfield park
the waterfalls we slid down!!
but unfortunately for us, we both got the giggles! You know when you just can’t help it and the more you try to hold it in, the more it comes bursting out?? Well that was us, tears streaming down our face as she was lecturing us!!!
10 minutes later, we (and our bags) were outside on the road!!!
Oh dear!!! Well, we went to the hostel across the road, and not only did they have availability but they asked us if we wanted to have the cleaning job, 2 hours in the morning, in exchange for free accommodation!! Wooo… a blessing in disguise!!
We also got our own room (all be it a green and purple, army bunker style cupboard under the stairs) but it’s a place to call home!!
One night we decided to have a “quite night in” so me, gem, will and Carl got a DVD and some pizza (and some beers) and it was all very civilised until we decided to play ring of fire…! I had to do an impersonation, and in my mission to create a Harry potter style scar on my face with shaving foam, ‘accidentally’ got foam everywhere!! In
2 seconds flat a war broke out and all of us were absolutely covered in foam… I mean really really covered!! It was so much fun!!! ;-)
The cleaning is a bit of a morning chore but we make it fun… when Gem manages to get up that is…!!! ;-) And working in the Hogs Breath is pretty good fun, hard work if I do say so myself!! They do over 500 covers a night, but im having fun trying to beat their ‘upsale’ record. This is where you have to sell sauces, extra bacon, avocado that kinda thing and then the top person gets rewarded! Its not rocket science hey!! ;-)
Darwin also has awesome markets, along the beach front on a Thursday and Sunday and me and gem went down to the beach to watch the sunset one night and then to the stalls and its got such a nice atmosphere. They have food from every single country and because we went to get some food quite late, they were selling it off cheaply and we had a whole plate of fish for $10… lovely jubly!!!
We had a brilliant night out in “Discovery” our
first time in a club for months!!! The four of us drank goon before hand and didn’t leave till 4am!!
So all in all, Darwin’s been pretty cool!!!
Lots and lots of love to you all
