We enjoyed our Fish "N" Chips in Darwin, they were quite yummy! Really liked Darwin. On the way out of Darwin we had to stop at a department store and buy a fan, we cant take this heat anymore, and I am too scared to have a door open all night, incase of spiders get me inthe night. Its been a life saver, well worth $24!
We left Darwin and went to Litchfield National Park, only a short drive there, but on the way through the park we stopped at several waterholes for a swim.
1st place was called Florence Falls, there was a viewing platform and we walked down around 135steps for a swim, the pool was lovely, clear water, two waterfalls, large fish and no crocs, so in we go.
After here we head for Buley Rockhole, which is lots of waterpools, some very deep, dark water so no idea how deep, Stu loved it, doing his diving. We stayed here for some lunch and just enjoyed the area. An Goanna came up for a look, he was quite a big lad, so we left him well alone.
Wangi falls, is the most popular, but
i would say the other 2 were much prettier than this one, plus there was a Freshwater Croc sign, to say they sometimes come here to be aware... so I just went in a little way but Stu went swimming out, this was a large area of water with a small waterfall at the back of the cove, again stunning, with forest all around you and millions of Fruit Bats hanging from the trees, making lots of noise and quite skinky.
On the way out of the park to where we were staying we stopped at Tolmer Falls, you cant swim here, just a viewing platform and a walking trail, so we descided to do this, on the way the signs stopped and we could work out which way to go, we didnt have enough water or the proper shoes on to get really lost so we turned back, but we found the correct way inthe end, its was SO HOT!! (Sue, my head felt like it was going to explode, like yours did in Spain, ha ha) but the views from the top of the mountain were pretty cool.
we stayed just outside the park for one
night, met a family around the pool from Luton - Sml World, they live over here, been here 6yrs and love it, who can blame them really!
We got up fairly early the next morning and headed back towards Katherine, but stopped off at Edith Falls, there was two tiers to this, lower level was a swimming pool area with the falls, again Freshwater croc sign, so as there was no one else inthe pool area we descided to stay near the edge, just incase! but the top level was great, waterfalls, clear waters, and just stunning, its really hard to explain what we have seen inthe last few days, just amazing, you have to pinch yourself at times!
We stocked up on food, grog and fuel then headed to Mataranka (Thermal Pools) stayed here for the night, had a swim in the natural pools, we were surrounded by Red Flying Foxes (which i think are still bats), there were millions of them, you can see a picture of when the sun went down and they came alive, cool thing to watch, whilst drinking your beer by your van!
Up early again... heading towards a place called
Wycliffe Well - UFO central, but we didnt see any. We stopped for a drink at a place called Daly Waters Pub, this was the first town (if you can call it that) that a areoplace landed to refuel, the pub was good fun, lots of hanging bras, tops, hats, shoes, money, anything you can think of was there. Just before we arrived for the night, we stopped at the Devils Marbles, which are said to be giant boulders of granite remains of molten lava after millions of years of weathering and erosion, these were great, huge lumps of stone.
We got to Alice Springs (Debs we are staying where you and I stayed back in 2003, its changed alot!), we have visited the Reptile Centre, we held lizards and Stu was a brave boy and held Susie Q the Olive Python, while we were in Bali we heard onthe news, that a local 7yr boy climbed the fence, early inthe morning, and killed some of the lizards, feed the alive ones to Terry the Saltie, but because he was so small no alarm was triggered off. We spoke to a keeper there and she said nothing will be
done, as his too young, and as his under 10 the parents cant be fined, what a horrible child!
We have also visited the Alice Springs Telegraph Station, build 1872, Overland line from Darwin to Adelaide, messages took hours, rather than months by sea. This was a really interesting place.
We had a sand storm, so the next day the clould was really low, but still HOT, and today we had big thunder and its much cooler now, enjoying it while it lasts.
Next plan of action is Kings Canyon/Ayres Rock.
We have seen so much wild life, since we arrived, Kangaroos, wallabys that come right up to you and see what you have nice to eat, Lizards, all kinds of bird life, I have to confess, I(Lisa) have killed 4 birds whilst driving, one was a really pretty parrott, I feel really bad about it, Stu calls me the bird killer.
