Sometimes Hotwire gives you something to remember. Our next four days, we spent at the Outrigger Twin Towers in Tweed Heads (next door to Coolangatta). There are two towers – one is the regular hotel and the second one is apartments. We had an apartment with breakfast every morning. When I say breakfast, I mean everything, fruit, juice, yogurt, porridge, cooked to order - pancakes, waffles, eggs, ham, or you could have anything from the hot trays, scrambled eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms, bacon, sausage or rice dishes (for those from the Asian countries. And then there was toast and bagels and crumpets and croissants and muffins and jams (even raspberry jam). I am sure if there was something missing, all you had to do was ask. The only drawback was the WIFI, but as it turned out you could access it in the various lounges and that worked out well. Woolworths and Coles were both in walking distance and it was nice to be able to get vegetables and cook a few suppers. The beach was just across the street. Saw a new 10 week old puppy there. And another black part lab that was having a great time catching
his stick out in the water. But he was huffing and puffing by the time in came in to shore. Sort of like us old people! We also saw the Ibis birds up close. It was nice to just lay back and read for a few days.
And then it was on see Byron Bay. What was unbelievable - we turned off the highway and almost immediately were in a lineup. Sure that there was an accident, we stayed in this line and 35 minutes later we were finally driving into Byron Bay. No accident! It just seemed to be wall-to–wall tourists. There was a lighthouse we were told we had to see. It was a nice drive up on a winding narrow road, and a spectacular view, only to find there was not a parking spot to be had. So our venture into Byron Bay did not prove to be the quiet little Bay we were expecting. On to Coff’s Harbour with a uneventful drive and greyish trees again. The next day we actually saw some new green in the distant hills. And spent the next night in Warner’s Bay, in an out of the Way motel across from a big lake. Beautiful area. That evening was spent on the internet trying to find a place to stay for Saturday night and Sunday night. We thought we might be like Mary and Brian – spending the night sleeping in the car. Things were happening around Sydney. The Sydney Navy was having a 100 year anniversary. Even Prince Harry attended. We were privileged to be able to watch it on TV. They used the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge as a backgrounds. Just a fantastic show with half an hour of fireworks and flybys. There is also the Rugby finals taking place Sunday night between Manly and the Roosters, both Sydney teams. And the school kids are still on holidays. So after 4 hours, we decided to backtrack and found a room in a little place called Kurri Kurri in the Hunter Valley. So the next day we drove out to Nelson’s Bay, expecting to find a nice quiet place we could sit and read at the beach. Again we found wall to wall people shopping in the quaint little town and again on the beaches. But there were several beaches. One we did stop at, I could not believe how fine the sand was. The dogs were having a wonderful time there! In one area, the houses were particularly big and nice and there were 2 White Rolls Royce cars with white ribbons. The drivers were in white uniforms. We think they were waiting for the bride and attendants to take them to the church. Later as we neared Kurri Kurri, we passed another 2 grey Rolls Royce vehicles with the white ribbons. Maybe it is a thing for the well-to-do families here in Australia.
On our drive in the countryside, a of a sudden there were cars parked on both sides of the road and we finally passed 3 fields, all playing rugby, Obviously, there were some final rugby games of the season going on. The last field was the older girls playing. and the stands for each game were all filled. People had parked at least 2 miles away! Australians really take their rugby seriously at all levels.
