Paradise found?
Well, we left Umina Beach this morning, leaving our very well appointed campsite to head north. Before we left though we had to get the whole fam together and do a bounce session on their huge inflated trampoline. Tell ya spending 15 minutes on that is almost like being on the Stairmaster back home. After getting quite the workout we were off, our next destination Seal Rocks, about 150 km north of here. This area is known for pristine beaches and an abundance of Grey Reef Nurse Sharks. The sharks that look nasty, but are harmless (or so they say.)
Our drive up was uneventful; we stopped at hungry jacks (burger king back home) to get Wes some chicken nuggets. You know that even burger king and McDonalds here have beets on their burgers? I dunno, but I could never get into beets onto burgers, when they ask if you’d like salad on your burger they really mean salad… beets, even carrots; strange if ya ask me.
So we get off the highway, turn down this long winding narrow road, after about 30 minutes on it, just up ahead the south pacific
ocean comes into view. What a sight to behold, beautiful blue ocean as far as you can see, with a slightly lighter blue closer to a pristine white beach, infact Seal Rocks is a peninsula surrounded by beaches, and they’re pretty much all deserted right now, so we have these huge beaches all to ourselves!
We pull into the RV Park, and ask the guy about the sharks; he said yep, there are a whole bunch of them just a couple hundred feet offshore on the reef. Jason is looking forward to going out snorkeling today! Kirk is asking questions though...lol We setup shop, and go for a quick walk to the local (and only) convenience store, everyone gets an ice cream, and we head back. We get our masks and snorkels and are off to the beach. There’s a bit of a surf cuz of a cyclone that went by a couple of days ago. Infact 2 days ago there were 20 foot waves here. Our search for sharks didn’t go to well, as the waves were a bit too much for Wes. Ah well, we may end up staying another day here, as it is so nice
and peaceful. We went up to the end of the beach and found a small lagoon that once in while gets a wave breaking into it (when you see a pic you’ll see what I mean) In this protected area we saw a school of puffer fish, probably 100 or so, all close to the bottom, beneath us.
We ended up being in the water for 3 or 4 hours, and got lots of sun. No one really turned crispy though. We got lots of cool pics today, infact in 9 days we’ve taken almost 1000 pictures!
I think we may stay another day, just to do some more snorkeling, if not we’ll head north some more, maybe visit the koala sanctuary just north of here.
More tomorrow!
