Weds 31st January
Happy birthday to you…happy birthday to you…happy 40th birthday dear Tracey…happy birthday to you!
To all those who sent me birthday cards thanks very much. I enjoyed opening them it made my day extra special as seen as its my 40th birthday. See you all soon. Love Tracey, x x
We woke up to room service and our breakfast at dead on 8.30am this morning here at our motel in Lakes Entrance, Victoria to it being Cloudy and cool. However, as the day wore on it became bright warm and sunny again. Doreen telephoned Tracey to wish her a happy 40th birthday just before brekkie arrived so that was good timing mother…hehe!
After opening her cards, I had to make Tracey wear her ‘I’m 40’ badges for the day but at least we spent it on 90-mile beach not far from our motel. In fact, it was a short stroll away and just before getting to the beach, Graham noticed a snake slithering into the undergrowth which was about 3 or 4 feet long…ooooerrr. Anyway, he must’ve been more frightened of us otherwise he’d have stuck around. Managed to get a photo of him, although we only
caught part of him after viewing it later.
Also today we visited a place called Raymond Island where wild Koalas live in the trees. We were also lucky enough to spot a ‘mum Koala’ with her young ‘un up in one of the trees so that was an exciting 5 minutes and also got some good photos of them.
We popped into Bairnsdale to have a look round but our faces had flies buzzing round them so we didn’t stay long…yukk. Even went into McDonalds and they were flying around inside there too, so fellow travellers may want to miss this area unless you like flies in your ears and on your face.
We then spent the rest of Tracey’s 40th birthday chilling out on 90 mile beach soaking up the sun and having a quick paddle in the sea every so often which was so relaxing and exhilarating. Sorry to rub it in guys back home in the UK…but you really have to see this place to believe it and if there is one place you MUST visit before you die…it’s the coast between Sydney and Melbourne.
If you have a look at this photo on
this page of the boat spewing out sand and water, it’s a sand dredger here at the mouth of Lakes Entrance. Because of the strong currents coming in and out of the Lakes’ Entrance it constantly shifts the sands, so this dredger seems to be working flat out keeping the channel clear so the sand doesn’t build up to stop boats and trawlers from operating. It’s quite a dramatic looking photo and so having not seen one of these in action before, we needed a photo.
Last night, Graham tried Flake with chips…and if you’re not familiar as to what ‘Flake’ is…its shark and it tastes wonderful although is similar in taste to cod but with finer flakes of fish. Totally boneless so it made a change to be trying something different. But then again…when in Rome….!!
Tonight we settled in at the Pelicano restaurant here in Lakes Entrance where Tracey went for the chicken schnitzel dish and Graham had a plate of garlic prawns…yummy….but guess who won’t be getting a kiss goodnight tonight…haha. The sunset here really is nice and with the moon almost at its full moon cycle at the other end of town with a pink
sky in the background it was great to see. No photos of this I’m afraid as we forgot to take the camera. Also a bit of advice to those travelling this coast, be aware that most restaurants and takeaways say ‘open til late’. Hmmmm..this actually means they close between 8pm and 9pm where back in the UK they would just be opening at this time. It kinda becomes a ghost-town after 6pm round here in a nice sort of way
I telephoned Burnsy ( John Paul Burns ) earlier as well, whom Graham used to go to school with who lives in Melbourne nowadays and we’re hopefully going to meet up with him over weekend. He was telling us there had been a shark attack up at Eden where we had just come from last week and had severly cut a man halfway down his body. I don’t know if the poor guy has survived or not or how he is, but John had said it made international news even back to the UK. Unfortunately, we’ve not had time to watch any t.v. so we’ve not been able to keep up with World or local news so maybe you
know more than us back home?
We leave Lakes Entrance in the morning so once again we’re packing our luggage in preparation for the drive up to Melbourne which should be fun.

Oh lordy Tracey's forty!!!
Happy birthday to you, Tracey, your 40th will certainly be a memorable one, I'm sure. We enjoyed your photo of Graham clutching his airline upgrade with such glee. We're reasonably certain his face will light up all of the electricity in Oldham for the rest of the winter. Definitely one for the family album. The pic of Tracey in her Homeland looks very pensive and poignant as though you are having many deep thoughts; but maybe just, something like what's for dinner!! Neph Jeff left for Hong Kong this a.m., and Mainland China, Tibet and Nepal. Now we have two bloggers to enjoy. How sad for us that our travels are all vicarious at the moment, but our day will come! Tom had a credit card stolen from his gym locker and within 39 minutes someonehad managed to charge $1000 at WalMart. The Thiefs tried again at Office Depot but the bank cancelled the card due to "suspicious" activity, thank goodness. More later - enjoying your trip, so keep these blogs coming! Susan and Tom
