It seems that everything here at UNSW is starting to open now that my flight home is getting closer and closer. Recently, a lot of restaurants that were supposed to be open when I first got here have started to actually open, and now there is a new grocery store, frozen yogurt place, pasta bar, coffee cart, and more right underneath the apartment I live in. There's also a Mexican restaurant opening up soon, along with a Max Brenner's. I guess it's actually a good thing that it's taken this long to open, because the fact that it was a 2 mile round trip to the grocery store meant I got exercise and didn't frequent there too often. That said, it is nice that the 7 am construction is starting to decrease slightly. Sure 7 am isn't too early, but it is if you didn't go to bed until 3 am the night before because you were writing a research paper. I'm also still not over the fact that all study places on campus close at 6 pm. How do people do homework after 6 pm here?? All I know is that no matter how hard I try to do work
The Challenge!
The contestants in their challenge--stay on the treadmill as long as possible or else you fall into the pool! in my bedroom, be it in Australia or Boston, I somehow end up in my pajamas curled up in bed under the covers fast asleep instead of sitting at my desk. No matter how hard I try. Even if it's at 4 in the afternoon. It really is quite a big issue and the only fix I've found is to do work not in my bedroom.
As much as my mother would probably say otherwise, I think it important to watch a little bit of television in a different country since each country has their own idea of what makes for good television. I found that I couldn't watch Chinese television while I was in Shanghai, not because I couldn't understand but because I just didn't find their style of acting entertaining. Although some of the shows that they air on television here are American, the one Australian show I do watch is
The Biggest Loser, which is this show where they take a lot of obese people and give them personal trainers and in three months they lose an insane amount of weight. When I first started watching the show here, I had to use my iPhone and
After The Challenge
Filming the rest of the episode after everyone had fallen of their treadmill. convert everything from kilograms to pounds (I know, very sad considering a pound is 2.2 kilos). Anyways, last week they shot an episode from the season that hasn't started airing here yet in the UNSW swimming pool. They made the contestants walk on a treadmill (walk, not run) until they fell off the treadmill into the pool, with the last one standing winning that challenge. I saw some pretty spectacular falls, and they even had to call the ambulance. I can't imagine slipping on the treadmill and hitting your head on the platform on your way into the deep end of a pool can be much fun, especially since I don't think too many of them are Olympic swimmers. They did have a couple of lifeguards on the scene to help them out though. The best part was that after watching them shoot the episode, we got to meet the host and the personal trainers! All in all, a pretty cool day.
Of course, it wouldn't be a trip to Sydney without going inside the Opera House. We went to hear Tchaikovsky, Strauss, and Walton played by the Sydney symphony. My favorite was Tchaikovsky, which had a little bit
to do with the fact that for four months of my life in high school I played that music on a daily basis. It was so entertaining though to watch the conductor! He was this cute little old Russian man (I think he's a famous conductor) who had to wipe all the sweat off of his face every five seconds. He was so animated though! Obviously, these professional musicians really don't need the crazy conducting he was doing, it was more of just a show for us. Which was great, because we opted for the side seats, so we could see his face and all the little thumbs up he gave to the orchestra. All in all, a great performance.
