Botanic Gardens
Can you see the arch oldest in Sydney made by convicts? Sydney by water
Getting to Sydney from Freshwater is not a problem. Buses are frequent and so are the Ferries. Sunday we decided would be a culture day so after a bit of a late start we arrived in the Botanic Gardens. We may have left our flask there and we just had to check, and guess what a whole day letter it was exactly where we had left it! On to see some more of the gardens then we went into the Art Gallery where Francis Bacon was being exhibited. the Art Gallery was free but not the exhibition so not being particularly interested we looked around the rest of the gallery. there were some interesting works in there and we particularly liked the Aboriginal works. we left there and queued to get into the Museum to see and exhibition on Alexander the Great, Sunday was not a good day to choose as there were a lot of people wanting to see this exhibition. It cost$18 to get in and we had to wait until 3 so we went in to the indigenous part of the Museum. I thought it would be about animal and plant species but it was

Nice place on Macquarie Street about Aboriginal culture. although we learnt much of this in Adelaide it was still interesting and I learned about how the crow got his name. then we queued for the main event and Steve enjoyed it enormously but found there were too many people there to get the most from it. I enjoyed listening to the recordings which told of his private life but we were both made aware of the huge contribution to present day life this one man made so very long ago. Obviously deluded into thinking he could become godlike he took on challenges most would have walked away from. In doing so much of what we take for granted today came from his exploits such as the alphabet, democracy, and using coins for currencyLeaving here we briefly visited the 50 years of Ballet in Australia at the Library. This was more my scene and I watched Swan Lake being performed together with a visual resume of the various artists and their roles in the Ballet Company. Also on exhibition was the costume and history of the Ballet and all for free!We made our way back to Manly via the Ferry and arriving in Freshwater Lea had
a Chicken and was preparing a roast the first we have eaten in over 3 months, yummy!Next morning we left early and took the ferry to circular key and then to Watson's bay this was a trip down memory lane. We had been here about twenty years ago. Well it had changed a little, a few more restaurants and houses but the green and playground was still there and the views hadn't changed much. We took a walk up to the headland with a view over the Pacific Ocean where years back huge ships sailed on their way to Sydney with immigrants. The view of Sydney had changed a little as now there were more skyscrapers. We then walked down to another part of Watson's Bay and found a small restaurant called The Garden Cafe which is a BYO and overlooks the water and we had the most delicious salads, mine was giant prawns and Steve had lamb to stop lambnesia ( a condition advertised in Australia where you are lacking in eating lamb). He felt much better afterwards and his memory also returned. We then took a ferry back to circular key and another to Darling Harbour so we could

Sydney Aquarium visit the sea life aquarium, Steve missed out on this last time we came here. Also in the harbour was a giant yellow duck, not sure of its significance except that Australia Day is coming up and maybe the Australians all go quackers! The Aquarium is really worth the money and if we were staying longer we would have bought the Merlin Pass for $ 80 which would have given us unlimited entry to all 11 attractions for a year, much cheaper than the Merlin pass in the UK. We saw so many different species of fish and invertebrate life here and then we saw the rays, sharks, and the Dugong!! Ancient Mariners took Dugongs for mermaids years ago, all we can say is mermaids must have been very ugly in those days! It was 5 by the time we left and then had to wait for the ferry (s) which took about two hours. Being on holiday that didn't affect us too much, and it gave us the opportunity to talk to the locals. Always an interesting thing to do and you never know who you are going to meet. We met a guy who used to go to Battersea
College just down the road from where I used to live and another couple from about 100km from Cairns who were out with their Grandchildren who live in Sydney. We eventually made t back to Freshwater then went out with H and L to Manly where we ate Fish and Chips next to the beach a lovely end to the day.
