I did the tourist bit for a while: the inside of the opera house, Darling Harbour and a great exhibition about the construction of the Harbour Bridge in one of the bridge towers. I then managed to track down Mike at the same hostel he had been staying at last time. Much of the old Melbourne crowd was still there, so it was down to the pub to revisit old times.

Of course, now that I have met up with Mike again, Arsenal bloody FC is going to be a big part of my life for a while.

There was an open air classical concert in Sydney whilst I was there and, after the Carols by Candlelight experience, I decided to check it out. Rain stopped play however, which was a considerable disappointment for several thousand people.

Mike had got £58 to get him back to England. I had more than that, but we were both going to have to rely on our credit cards and then hope that we could get jobs quickly back in England.

debt. In other ways, they could help you out of a crisis situation (I would never have got down to Melbourne to get work without my credit card) and they could prevent you from missing out on some once in a lifetime experience that you wouldn't be able to afford otherwise.

Without wishing to sound like a Barclaycard ad, they also offer you some protection on any goods that you buy, and some cards will also automatically insure that present for Granny in case it gets smashed on the way home.

So my Travel Tip number 8 is "Carry a credit card".

We sadly said goodbye to Australia, and I was certainly very, very sure that I would return. It was exciting however as after working and staying put for a while, we were back on the move and the adventure was to continue.
