Pre-Drinks
Catching up on Bedford times Three became four on Thursday (8th March) when we met Ally at Sydney International Airport. Both our journeys had been long so we were pleased to all see each other and be met by our host Chuck, an old gap student from Bedford, who some of you might know. We arrived to a beautiful house in Mosman which was a lovely location with stunning views over the harbour. It was a relief to have a hot shower, fluffy towels and a flushing toilet after India. While we were getting showered and ready for our first night out in North Sydney, Chuck got the Barbie going. We had drinks on the balcony overlooking the harbour lights of Sydney with a handful of old gap students and friends who we had spent some time with a couple summers back. A great night was had by all in a few local bars and clubs.
Friday - Despite a late start we wasted no time in catching a ferry across the harbour to Circular Quay, central Sydney. We grabbed a bite to eat, booked our Greyhound bus pass, (which starts next week on Tuesday 20th) and started spending the Dollars. After spending the afternoon
in the sun shopping and sight-seeing we had worked up an appetite for dinner and ended up in a German restaurant…of all places.
The next day, we took a scenic walk on recommendation, from Mosman to Chowder Bay along the harbour coastline, taking in the city from every angle with many great photo opportunities. We chilled out on the beach in Chowder Bay and took our first dip in the Pacific Ocean. After a couple hours there, we moved on to Balmoral Beach which was equally as pretty but much more popular with the locals. A change of scene for the evening when we headed to The Aussie Stadium to watch a Super 14 rugby league match - Waratahs (Sydney home team) vs The Bulls (South Africa). The atmosphere was fantastic despite the Waratahs losing to their opponents but spirits were kept high as we followed the fans down into Oxford Street where we spent the rest of the evening on a night out in Sydney.
On Sunday we moved on to stay with Ally’s cousin Ben, at his flat in Coogee, an eastern suburb of Sydney with more of a beach scene. Funny story actually…with all the
Mosman Bay
The walk from Mosman to Chowder Bay excitement of our arrival, Ben managed to lock us out of his flat before we had even got our luggage up the stairs. With no other option, we hit Coogee beach and its rock pools for the afternoon. Everyone was jumping off the cliffs into the rock pools which were massive. Once we had managed to get back into the flat, the evening was chilled, making our first home cooked meal of the holiday.
Yesterday (Monday) we headed back into the city for a second time for some more sight-seeing. We visited the Opera House, took a ferry under Sydney Harbour Bridge and walked along Darling Harbour to Sydney Aquarium. After heading back to Coogee, Ben took us to a five dollar steak house (two pound fifty) money well spent and then we checked out some of the local “watering” holes.
The plan is to stay in Coogee until the weekend when we head to the Blue Mountains to stay with Jana (from the India Tour) and head to Bondi beach for Kim's birthday!!!
