You're Never Too Old for the Dodgems
And check out how fast we were going! After almost 4 months in Australia, the majority of which has been in Sydney, we have reached the end of phase two. From now on each destination will bring us nearer London. It is amazing to think we have now been away for over 7 months, we'll be home before we know it! So we had better make sure the South America leg of the adventure is a good one!
Our time in Sydney has been a fantastic experience of what it is like to live and work in another country. There are many many good things about this place, it really is such a shame that it is so damn far from the UK. We will let the pictures summarise what we have been up to and instead pay a tribute to the place with a couple of lists ....
Things we are going to miss about Sydney:
- The best commute in the world - going to work on a ferry, in the sunshine through the harbour and past the Opera House.
- Excellent and cheap meals out. BYOs everywhere!
- High quality Asian food - both in restaurants and supermarkets.Imagine Sainsbury's
We Love
We Love Slides!
Not quite the same as the Cape Town water slides but brilliant fun none the less Slides!
Not quite the same as the Cape Town water slides but brilliant fun none the lessselling raw tiger prawns, in bags big enough to feed 4, for only a few quid. We also had our first Tepanyaki experience. We´ll be hunting some more of this down when we get back to London. I haven´t had this much fun throwing food around in ages!
- Some of the best coffee I have ever tasted. I'd never heard of a flat white before I got here, but man will I miss them.
- Seeing the sea every day
- The Sydney Opera House. In a city lacking in great architecture, this one amazing building makes up for all the rest. You just don't get bored seeing it.
- Our old friends here: Adam, Ems, Lisa, Eddie, Leigh, Gina and Shawn
- Our new friends here: James, Amy, Dave, Zoe and Marty
- A healthy outdoors lifestyle.
- The best bus drivers ever encountered. There might only be 3 buses an hour, but when they arrive you are greeted with a cheery bloke who loves his job, is willing to help you out and won't
Baddock Massive
Well, its just me and Lis but it certainly brought back the memories of the good old days slam the doors on you and drive off grinning.
- Cider cider everywhere. Marissa is having to brace herself for the first part of the trip without readily available fermented apples.
Things we aren't going to miss about Sydney:
The stress of nearly missing the ferry, every time we tried to catch one!
Sydney Public transport in general, it really is a total mess - I will never criticise the tube again. I promise. OK well only once in a while ...
Pedestrian Crossings. Not only do they beep like a demented siren, but they only give you a few seconds to cross. If you miss it you´ll end up waiting 5 minutes for it to turn green again.
Sydney Pubs. A hell of a lot of beer is drunk here, but they could do with better places to drink it. While I´m at it, in my time here I never did get the hang of the difference between a schooner, a mid and a pot. Trust me, it is complicated stuff
All the rain. At least now, after months of downpours, the reservoirs are 45% full. Yes I know, the weather
Aren't We Getting Old
Gina and I used to hang out together when we were kids on our family holidays in Cape Town. Now she's got a baby of her own! And a very sweet one at that. is usually much better here 😉
Pizza. There might be a large Italian community in Sydney, but most of them clearly haven't been home in a while. We have 3 words for them. Wood fired oven.
- Playing bridge with Adam. Word of advice for anyone reading this, whatever you do DON´T PLAY BRIDGE WITH ADAM! Poker, on the other hand - Brilliant fun!
And that ladies and gents, was Australia. We loved it and hope to be back someday. If someone can just invent a plane that can do the distance in 12 hours and runs on cabbage.

The trip looks fabulous. You are making me home sick (even if it is Oz). We've been having floods up north in summer, while it seems that you have been having wonderful sun in winter! Unfair I say - enjoy it while you can. Have a great time in Sth Am! Mark H
