Saturday 9th August…
Don’t mix antibiotics and alcohol. You know it BUT you still do it! Gav not feeling great this morning. We didn’t consume copious amounts but the affect on Gav was amplified and it was a slower start than usual! Today we were off to Clifton Gardens, in North Sydney - where a picturesque sandy beach and playground were ours to enjoy (with a load of other people of course). Boys went off exploring the rocks and beach, then hit the modern playground with its spacey theme. We all enjoyed a picnic courtesy of P&C. Took a walk on the jetty but the shark warnings (!) and lack of fencing concerned me and I was rather keen to get back onto dry land, where the boys quickly stripped down to undies and paddled in the water (it was a shark free cordoned off area I hasten to add!).
We drove home back over the Harbour Bridge and were dropped off at the Hotel where we held out for as long a pit stop as we could before being pestered out and about again, and off for a ride on the Monorail - or mone-ro-rail as Joey called
it! It goes round in a circle so we did a circuit. It’s great that something so simple can be so entertaining for them - and we get to sit down for a bit too! Found ourselves at Jordan’s again and it didn’t disappoint. The fun didn’t end as we caught the Mini Train back to our side of the Harbour - that was more expensive than the mini-rail!
We finally exhausted Joey and he fell asleep in the buggy going straight to bed at 5.45pm. Managed to get Jack down at 7.15 and I had the evening to myself as Gav went out with Pete to see an Aussie rules footie game - Sydney (Pete's team) vs Perth (Adam's team) - Sydney won, just as well!
Sunday 10th August…
Out by 9.15am - possibly the holiday record - and down to Wildlife World on Darling Harbour. It was a quiet Sunday morning and we were able to enjoy the animals in some peace. Crocodiles, Turtles, Snakes & Insects - Ants, Stick and Spiders, including the most deadly in the world which LIVES IN SYDNEY(!) - the Funnel Web. Koalas on the Rooftops, including a really naughty
one called Charlie who would not stay up in his eucalyptus tree and was climbing down and trying to run away. Then Kangaroos, Birds and Butterflies - Gav managed to get one to land on his hand. We stroked a Water Dragon and a River (Python?) Snake and I told Jack to have a LOOK at his head behind the Ranger’s back which he did but really close up at which point we rather alarmingly called him back quickly! All in all the whole attraction was a pretty excellent one, seeing all these animals in a compact but well designed environment.
After this, Gav took the kids on the Mone-ro-rail x 3 times whilst I did a little mystery shopping (in that what I bought was and still is a mystery to Gav). We met up for lunch at Pitt St Central Food Court where we had gorgeous gourmet sandwiches. We were all tired and in bad moods, kids were having meltdowns so it was back to hotel for emergency R&R. Late afternoon we caught a cab over to Leichhardt to spend our last evening in Sydney. Had delicious homemade Chicken Pie for dinner and chatted the evening away,
eventually saying our goodbyes to our friends.
Monday 11th August…
Our last day and it was a beautiful sunny morning and generally the weather has been around 15 degrees, down to 9 degrees at night. Most locals were wearing their winter coats, whilst we strolled out in our t-shirts for breakfast! It was a bit breezy today so we did have to go back for warmer wear. All packed and checked out by 10.30pm and we had till 3pm to DO more Sydney before our taxi to the airport. Managed to fit in another trip on the Double Decker train only 1 stop down to Circular Quay to catch a boat round to Darling Harbour so we could just take one last look at the Opera House, go under the Bridge and see Sydney from the water.
Breathing in the view is a real tonic as I reflect on how much I Love Sydney and feel I could live here - if only it weren’t so far from the UK! Squeezed in a Mone-ro-rail circuit - you can tell that transportation is a big feature of our kid entertainment program on this trip - and met Sarah
(down from Brisbane on business) for lunch at the Lindt Chocolate Café (!!!!) where it would have been RUDE not to have the House Hot Chocolate - mmmmmmm! A delicious end to our last day and although I was sad to be leaving, this was fairly easily displaced by the excitement of our next destination - Hawaii!
