We decide to take a look at Port Macquerie which is not far from Bonny Hills (about 20k) as we get there Shenton bumps into the same bloke he has been seeing each place we stop. He also has a landcruiser but he has a boat on top. Apperently he is also going to Cape York so I guess we will be seeing him along the way. Shenton is really happy about this as he wants to go fishing with him in his boat. I think he is a bit scarey as he has a massive hairy head and looks like Grisly Adams!
Port Macquarie is another lovely little town where we take out a 2 man canoe. We have a relaxing trip arond one side of Pelican Island and pass the Oyster farm in the middle of the water. All is good as the tide is taking us around the Island and we dont even have to paddle that much. Then we turn the corner and the fun starts. We are now going against the tide and the waves are big, I am getting wetter and wetter and the canoe is moving all over the place. This is not
helped by a group of tennage boys who decide it will be fun to drive thier boat really fast towards us to cause an even bigger wake and a huge wave to completely soak me. Needless to say I was glad when we got back on dry land.
After a delicious lunch of Kofti we took Tank on another car ferry and over to a small National Park that has only 4 wheel drive access. Tank loved this and so did Shenton, we drove through massive puddles and over rocks and Tank ate up the road. This is what he is made for and the reason we got Tank in the first place.
After a bit of a dirve we end up at a place called Crescent Heads, there are loads of surfers out right near the rocks and they are really good, surfing parallel to the shore all the way in. If I was in there I am sure I would be straight up on the rocks. There is a great golf course here, right on the edge of the cliff. I guess it is a bit dangerous though for the surfers with any stray golf balls!
We were planning to stay the night in the car park right on the beach but there were too many signs saying no overnight camping, so we moved on back up the hill to a dirt carpark we had seen, togther with a German couple who were also looking for a place to stay in thier van.
We got there and it seemed there was a party going on, a group of pissed Aussie blokes came over and had a chat with us, very amusing, then we settled in for a good nights sleep listening to the waves below crash onto the beach. The question is will Tank start up in the morning.........
The answer is NO!!!!! So we are now in a car park at the top of a hill and Tank is going nowhere. The experience is different again as so many people are willing to give us a hand. In the end about 6 blokes push Tank and we try to jump start him. We nearly get him going but not quite there. Then Matty appears who is a body building, tattoed, Charlie look alike and he really wants to have a go at jump
starting the car as he used to have one just like this. So we have one shot, down a steep little hill which leads directly onto the main road, so Matty gets in we push Tank towards the hill and he splutters a little but just doesn't want to start. So Matty jumps in his van and says "don't worry about the cars they will go round you (we are virtually in the middle of the road) I'll just go and get a rope, be back soon" So we wait there not knowing if he is coming back, but 20 minutes later he is back and tows us up the hill. We push Tank over the brow and if he is going to start it has to be down this massive hill. He splutters a couple of times and then Hurrah he starts. I am jumping up and down for joy in the middle of the road and I officially love Matty for all his help. We need to get Tank to a garage to get these glow plugs fixed, but it is Easter so we decide to head somewhere where we can stay until after Easter to find a
mechanic to fix Tank up for the journey ahead of us.
