Wine. Vin. Vino! The Hunter Valley Wine trip. A day of drinking, basically yeh. It is a two and a half hour drive north to Hunter Valley from Sydney. THe Macquarie exchange group on campus arrange a bus for 58 of us to go to 3 wineries and bluetounge brewery. Friday, Sept 5 it rained all day. Our bus driver got lost going in circles around the vinyard maze and eventually took down a barbed fence turning around. We all laughed and yelled for him to stop, but I don't think he cared, and then we got scared a bit of going down a muddy slope. Thank goodness we did not. A group of wallabies (mini kangaroos) were in a field chilling with the cows. That was cool. No pictures though because the bus windows had condensation and it was raining out. First winery, Lindmans, we learned what makes a good wine by look, smell, and taste. After whites, reds, sparkling and desert wines we headed to McGuigan winery. McGuigan is a much nicer wine than Lindmans and the tasting was better too. We got to sit at bar-like huts and got a tasting list. Amazingly, I walked away with only
one bottle, but of one of their specialty 'not in stores' wine. A white semillon sauvignon blanc. I'm actually drinking it as I write. Our third winery was the Golden grape. I think by this time many had a little much to drink, . The special pride at the Golden grape was the Dragons breath chili schnapps. (I was tempted to gift one for Joey B. but decided against it.) The brewery turned into a big drink time with lots of samples, free scooner of your favorite, and then a relay. An excellent day, mind the rain, and the broken toilet on the bus! No actual tours, just drinks and an experience up in the wine country.
