21/12/08 = A mild hangover and an arrival in Cronulla
Woke up at 6:15 for same reason as usual and caught end of the sunrise over the sea. Was too sleepy to appreciate it and crawled straight back into bed. Woke up a few more times, but only properly got up at 10am, when van got so unbelievably hot that could feel my insides cooking. Resisted for a while, but then got up, had a my museli breakfast (not quite the same as the bacon sandwich I would usually have after drinking) and walked over road to beach. Was a beautiful sunny day with not a cloud in sky 😊.
Beach was really full because was a Sunday, but had a realy nice feel to it. Perfect sunbathing conditions because was a lovely breeze again. Such a shame to feel grotty from drinking. Not sick and no headache, just grotty. Laid down for a good hour, but felt really restless because was so tired and just couldn't sleep. Ended up getting up and going for a little walk to van. Did another hour on beach, but then had had enough and so came off beach and went into town.
Pacific Drive 2
Sorry, that's all the photo's I took...completely forgot to take any in Cronulla. Rang about some horse riding I had seen, but they were full for day and not enough people going out tomorrow. Only thing they could do was a forest ride and I really wanted a beach ride - think I'll keep waiting. Then I ran into town to pick up a christmas present had seen for Deb while she went to supermarket. Had to be really quick so she didn't get suspiscious. Really hard to buy for someone that you are with all the time! Bought her some earrings but weren't really impressed with them - just only thing I could find in time I had. Disappointed.
Set off for Cronulla then, which was recommended to us by a friend. Again, only a v.short drive and took Grand Pacific Road to get there. Grand Pacific supposed to be an amazing road that hugs the coastline, but so far had been v.disappointed with it. Took quite a bit of driving before got to good part = bridged road jutting out over sea. Was v.nice, but didn't last long. When did get to Cronulla, both had visions of a nice sandwich again - still not had one yet - so went on the hunt. Cronulla = lovely seaside town and lots of nice cafes and bars; shame they were all shut. Took ages to find somewhere that was open (was Sunday) and in end was a lovely sandwich man that took pity on us even though he was closing. Got a gorgeous prawn sandwich and a lovely smoothie, Deb's tuna sanwich looked good too. Headed back to grassed area by the sea and ate there with everyone else that was out for day. So brilliant how people in Australia all gather together on Sunny days. All family and friends head for beaches and parks, take picnics, chairs/tables, BBQ foods and just chill out and play games all day. Shame we don't do that in England...but I suppose it does require sun, which would limit us to 1 day of the year and would need a v.good weatherman to predict it!
Deb got an ice cream then. Looked really nice but I was too full. Maybe come back later. Wind had picked up a little and was quite cold, so decided to walk back to van to grab our cardis and read on grass for a while. Couldn't find van at first and walked down completely wrong street. Had to track back. Forgetting where you've parked...isn't that supposed to be an older persons thing? Doesn't bode well! Read in park for a while and when got too cold came back to van again. Made sure we found it first time this time! Finished reading book in van, then decided to find a night time spot for sleeping. Got a milkshake from ice cream shop on way - beautiful. Had thought parking would be quieter at night, but was just more busy, with people going out for night and leaving cars over night. Got to park by sea, but were quite far away from toilets = never a good thing for me! Did the night time toileting thing together (not in same cubicle obviously), then came back and got ready for bed. Did 30mins reading and already wanted toilet again, but was no way walking passed all people on a night out in my pyjamas - do still have some standards... v.low standards...but they're still there! Closed my eyes instead and started to excited about christmas....can't believe is 22nd December tomorrow!
22/12/08 = Sunbathing and shopping in Cronulla
Woke up in a v.v.v.hot van this morning. Got up and got moving straight away. Went to library first (which we stumbled on by chance - they love us as much as we love them!) and did the internet thing for an hour. Then we went to look for the infomation centre so they could tell us where the nearest campsite was. Turns out that Cronulla doesn't have an information centre (=first place been in Australia that doesn't), but didn't matter anyway, because a shop lady told us where one was.
Before finding site, headed to beach to enjoy sun. Beautiful day and beach very busy. Plonked ourselves down and within another hour, beach was totally full. To be honest, was probably one of worst beaches seen on our trip. Was way too small, too busy and not v.pretty at all. Still nice to lay on a beach though. Laid until could take no more, then finally went for cool off in sea. Made sure I went between flags, because life guard kept hollering across beach anytime anybody moved a mm out of flagged area. Actually really loved being in sea and never thought I'd say that...especially in Australia. Waves were really big and everybody was jumping them or diving into them. I joined in too and was really good. Sea so powerful that it really carried you when you dived into it.
After beach, went into town for post office and quick shop. Ended up treating myself to new dress. Nothing special and only cost $6, but just so nice to buy something new and know I've got something to wear that not grubby and already worn 100 times! Had to get a necklace to go with it though...because dress to plain and didn't bring any necklaces with me. Don't know how that happened - me not bringing any jewellry - think Mum must have unpacked it in her non-essential pile! Anyway, decided neckalce could be a christmas present from me to me!
Posted some things home then headed back to van. Ended up in an ice-cream shop en route (Deb and her ice-creams!). Resisted urge to buy one because knew we had loads of food to eat and having a big meal when got to campsite. Finding campsite was a mini-mission. Took 2 attempts at sites and twice driving round a busy road, but eventually got there. Office was closed when we got there, so just pulled into a space we could find. Did my usual thing...bet everyone can guess that by now...went to make food! Some things never change ay! Had spaghetti on toast (usual 3 slices - greedy piglet 😊) then came back to van and had to move it to a powered site. Still hadn't paid for site yet, but none of us could be bothered to keep checking office, so chilled in sun and read book for a while. Washed clothes, bit more reading, then went top make big pasta dinner at 8:15. Used all of our last tins and all our pasta = huge dinner! Still managed to get it all in though!
Back at van for evening. Chilled in bed listening to music for ages, then bed. Still not paid for site yet. Feeling bit guilty....but not guilty enough to go to office...not really turning into a thief Mum - promise...do still have morals...some....oh no 😞
