a farmers wife talking to the RFDS via radio
This morning we caught up on a few chores, did the washing and tidied up a bit. We then drove out to visit the Royal Flying Doctor Service Base. This was very very interesting. We enjoyed our time here. They RFDS now has around 19 or 20 Bases. We watched a video explaining about this invaluable service and then did a tour of the Broken Hill Base. Three of the planes were at the Base at the time of our visit. Amongst the photos below, you will see a picture of a Pedal Radio. This was invented by Alfred Traeger and distributed to isolated properties throughout QLD in 1929, giving people in remote areas a means of communication

We then drove back in to Town so as Steve could have a milkshake at the Bells Café. This Café is caught in a time warp - 50's décor. (Teresa and Wayne- your girls would love it here). The old duke box in the corner, the laminate tables and lots of items in all the 'old' packaging. It brought back a lot of memories, I am sure that we all remember the laminate tables etc.

Steve and I then went to a place called, Alfrescos for lunch, followed by a lovely walk around Broken Hill. We visited the War Memorial and I took a photo of the soldier carrying the grenade (for you Gail xx).

We then drove out to the Sculpture Park. This was very interesting. It is situated on a magnificent hill named Sundown hill, overlooking Broken Hill. Gosford based sculptor, Lawrence Beck proposed the Symposium to the Mayor, Peter Black during an Art Show in Broken Hill. Following his decision to go ahead with the sculpture park 53 tonnes of sandstone was moved to the area. On April Fools Day in 1993 the uncut stone sat in all its glory, roughly arranged in two columns linking the Pinnacles, Sundown and distant Bourke, where Fred Hollows is buried.

"Broken Hill is home to the world’s largest silver, lead and zinc mine run by Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP). BHP was established here in 1885 after Charles Rasp and two mates pegged out a mineral lease at a rocky outcrop known as 'the broken hill’. The land was found to hold the richest sliver-lead-zinc concentration ever found. These days, Broken Hill offers visitors mining tours and museums

as well as many other experiences. Many established artists work here, big-budget films have been shot in Broken Hill and in nearby Silverton"

What a great day. The weather was kind to us as well, very cold but dry 😊
