This is our final day in Sydney, although there have been some very cool sites, and we’ve had a lot of fun we’re really looking forward to getting in the RV and doing some exploring. Our day started off by going down to the rocks area (again - this is a real nice part of town, with lots of good cafe’s and interesting shops.) We explored the Saturday market which sold lots of locally crafted items and trinkets; it was an outdoor covered flea market. We stopped at a local café which setup shop outside and cooked food to order. Really excellent and cheap breakfast, I would have definitely gone back here again. Nice view also, just a couple hundred feet from the waters edge, overlooking the opera house.
After breakfast we went back to our hotel and packed things up, ready to get into our RV. We called down for a maxi taxi (a minivan) but were informed that there were some races in another part of the city, and the wait would be over 1 hour. So much to my disappointment we took 2 taxi’s halfway across the city, not really sure if both of them would arrive
in the same place. The cab drivers here are the same as in Toronto, mostly immigrants who speak not much English. Much to my, and Jason’s surprise we made it, and arrived at the RV spot.
This RV very big for the roads in old part of Sydney, Jason would never drive it there, hopefully where we’re going they’ll be bigger lanes. Anyhow, we get the RV and the Aussie explains how to use it, all features and such. Before we leave we visit a French bakery across the street apparently all of Sydney knows about, and the curry chicken pies were great. There really has not been any bad food anywhere here yet.
So we’re off, Jason driving on the left side of the road. Just got to remember to stay on the left. It’s real tricky on the turns, and roundabouts everywhere… not to mention we’re driving a bus!
We’re heading off to the Blue Mountains and Katoomba. It’s about 100 kms away; we average 90 km/h so we’re not on the road long. In Katoomba we stop at a market called Coles and stock up on groceries, beer & wine. Not much difference between Canada and Australia here, tell ya though there are some huge chocolate bars here, and sure some different kind of potato chips, like honey baked ham chips, and chicken chips. After stocking up we’re off to our first campsite.
Our campsite is only 5 minutes down the road; we pull in, get a powered site, and put all the clothes & groceries away. Our campsite is only 500 feet away from a place called scenic world, where we’re going to visit tomorrow. About 30 minutes after we got there in pulls a campervan just like ours, and what do ya know it’s a family from Newmarket with 4 kids, the youngest 22 months, and 2-1/2 years old. Their kids managed traveling real well; I couldn’t imagine doing the trek that they did. We chat for a half hour or so, they flew into Sydney, and got the RV right away and traveled up to Brisbane, and are now back down here some 2000 kms later. Anyhow, we grab a bite to eat, and are off to bed. Tomorrow the real adventure begins!
More tomorrow!
