Having read about how spectacular the Blue Mountains were.
We decided to check it out for ourselves.
(The Blue Mountains get their name from the reaction of the eucalyptus oil and the sun, causing a blue haze above them...) Having called into an info centre in Glenbrook.
They told us where we could camp for free.
Not being a 4 wheel drive "Potter" was unable to negotiate some of the unsealed roads to these camps....
However several hours later we found a campsite just outside the national park at megalong valley.
A great little spot, had our own campfire, a creek with resident water dragons and a massive wombat hole.
"Skim" was determined to see a wombat and being nocturnal we decided to stake out the wombat hole at night -
But no joy! But she did manage to spot a kookaburra, and hear it laugh.
But much to her despair she couldn't get a close up photo.....
We had fun playing at being intrepid explorers for the few days that we were there, by doing the cooking by camp fire, bathing in the creek
Oh look!
Our own camp fire.... and exploring the forest walks.
One thing that did amaze us was the assortment of birds we saw, all different colours from parrots to magpies and the views were spectacular.
Just see for yourselves.....

Pottering round...
I wondered where the name came from for those mountains! Now, you get yourselves back to Hereford, and quick about it, or you'll miss the plunging temperatures, the thick frosts, the icy paths... but there are NO nasty insects around! See? Don't know what you're missing... or perhaps you do. Excuse me, I'll just go and put on another layer of fleeces, then I'll look at your pictures.
