14th December 2008 - GETTING FESTIVE
After leaving Eden we set off towards Narooma. We stopped in Mystery Bay along the way because we liked the name. Didn't appear to be much of a mystery though as quite a few people were on the beach having a walk (still too cold for sun worshipping and swimming). Some good waves crashing against the rocks made it a nice walk. Anyone into rock pooling would have had a field day here too!! Worth a visit but why it's a mystery will remain a mystery to me!!!
We arrived in Narooma at around 4.30pm. We tried to get the burner on to cook some soup but Billy wind kept blowing out the flame until eventually we admitted defeat!! Bread and Butter it was for tea!!! We then drove into town and called in a coffee shop for a brew and a warm. We got chatting to the lady in there who was really nice. She told us about the 'Carols by Candlelight' service that was taking place that evening. Cool...we had been trying to drop on one but kept missing them by a couple of days.
The show started at around 7pm.
Lots of the people from the community turned out (mostly families with children) and we got right in there sitting on the floor at the front with all the kids. It was hosted by a man and woman. The guy was a bit of a Cliff Richard wannabee although he was a little bit cheekier and the old ladies loved him!!! A choir sang - lots of old ladies and a young girl who definitely looked like she loved lamp (all you anchorman fans out there will know what I mean!!). Some kids performed, the hosts sang and the audience joined in. It was good fun and Nat and I joined in singing and jigging about to all the carols and songs!!
It ended at around 9pm and from there we went and found a spot for the night near the fishing river. I went to sleep thinking about christmas.......can't believe it is less than 2 weeks away!!!
15th December 2008 - BEACH GAMES IN BATEMANS BAY
We woke this morning to load of people gathered in the space outside the van. It was early and as I peered out the window still half asleep I saw loads
of cyclists stood around waiting for others to arrive. Once again....I don't understand whan any of these people go to work unless everyone is on flexi-time?!! Whatever it is.......they should bring it in in England!! I settled back down in the van and could have easily have gone back to sleep if it hadn't been for one guy who kept blowing a comedy horn. I was about to get up and shove the horn (ever so politely) where the sun don't shine when they set off for their monday morning ride. We were wide awake by this point so it was a case of getting ready and driving to a different part of the river to do the board-walk. Really nice little walk....Narooma is a very pretty town!!!
From Narooma we headed on the road towards Batemans Bay. We drove a scenic route and stopped at a couple of beaches along the way for a look and a little walk. The sun was shining again but also had compettion from a cold wind!! Better than previous days though so I didn't complain!!
Batemans Bay didn't really live up to the map. It seemed really big with loads to
do but when we arrived it wasn't so. Nice coastal town but not much going on and the sea was too rough to take boats out apparently. We sat out in the sun for a while and chatted to a guy from Switzerland who was doing the opposite route around Australia to us. A useful chat as we were able to swap some travel stories and find out about some of the places we were heading. We then had a wonder into Batemans Bay to the information centre to see if she could advise us of anywhere to go or thing to see.
Following the advice from the info lady we headed to South Durras National Park. It was after 5 when we arrived so the forest gallery was closed. Instead we drove down to the beach and spent a good hour walking and playing games in the sand. We played a few games of pictionary where we both drew a sport, a film and a famous person and then had to guess each others, we had a game of squares, guess the phrase and guess the friend. It passed the time well and my thighs had a bit
of a workout from squatting for so long whilst i drew. Nat was up against it with my artistic skills and method of thinking outside the box!! But then again........who wouldn't get Tom Cruise from a drawing of a tomato and a ship?!!!! Sand games are the way forward!!!
At around 7.30pm we drove back to Batemans Bay, having a nosy in Surfside along the way. We looked around for a bar or a pub but no luck. Not sure where the residents go out here but we certainly couldn't find anywhere to go have a beverage or two!!! We must have been looking in the wrong area.
I was a little disgruntled when I went to bed that evening. I'm having a great time but I keet forgetting that i'm travelling and I aren't just on holiday. I was frustrated that I aren't doing something adventurous or different every day. The last week seemed to have just been driving and walking and although there is nothing wrong with that I felt a bit like we were seeing loads of places but not really doing anything in them. I think I was just being silly as I have
Mystery Bay!!!
Mixing it up with the Black and White!!! lots of things planned and as i'm away for 8 months I can't (and funds won't allow) me to do something 'out of this world' everyday!! I realised I am very lucky to be able to travel and see so much of the world and that the adventurous stuff will come in good time!!! Silly Debs!!!!
16th December 2008 - LEAVING BATEMANS BAY
We were up with the larks this morning and I felt better today. I was awake at around 6am but tried to lay still for as long as possible until my hunger for museli took over me!!! We were dressed and on the road before 8am headed towards Canberra...what would Capital County bring?!!!
