Drummond & Smith
This is my "college" home for the next 5 months! Hello everyone!
O-Week was one of most eventful weeks ever! Since us LHU girls got here 5 days early, we had the chance to meet many other older students that lived in Drummond & Smith. The RF's (residence fellows....what we would call an RA!), academic support team, and the DSRAC (the student board of the college... president, VP, secretary, social reps, sports rep, ect.) are some of the people that we met. We all became pretty good friends. It was very helpful during O-week because the other freshers (freshman) were just getting to meet others and here are these American girls 10,153 miles from home but we have friends in Australia!! It was SO comforting!
O-week started on Sunday, February 13th with a meet and greet in the courtyard. There was a moon bounce and some touch rugby being played. It was raining, but that didn't stop the fun! We all got DRENCHED while playing in the moon bounce and if you weren't, one of the boys would make sure that they pushed you into a puddle! Then we all had our first meal in the D&S dining hall. It was very good for school food. If you
O-Week!
Heather and I during the first day of O-Week! didn't know yet, I decided to become a vegetarian. They always have other options available for non meat eaters that are actually really delicious! After lunch we met our RF, Abby, who is in charge of my floor, Mid-D. She has a great sense of humor and doesn't charge if you lock your keys in your room. (Lock Haven is so strict about locking yourself out!) She went over the rules and other events going on during the week. We learned that we have Co-Ed bathrooms- GROSS!!! I had no idea how I would be able to get use to sharing a bathroom with boys but I'm slowly adjusting. It was a fun first night meeting new people!
On Monday, February 14th, we started the day with heading up to the UNI. The event was called "lifesaver day". It was a huge room filled with clubs, businesses, churches, sports teams, and other types of booths that were giving out information. We got tons of free stuff- Pens, note tablets, food, bags, even a free SIM card! It was very overwhelming with the noise but helpful with all the freebies! We had a BBQ for lunch and then headed back
My scavenger hunt team
We had to take a shopping cart into Mackers! to Drummond to return all of our goodies. That afternoon was nothing like I would have expected! Chelsea, Heather, and I headed to SportUNE to participate in some games and check out the gym, pool, and the fields. The SportUNE facility was SO NICE! I cannot wait to become a member of the gym there (even though you do have to pay for a membership!). The game that was being played was volleyball and I'm not much of a volleyball player so I just cheered on Drummond! After we left SportUNE, we had some courtyard games in Drummond's lawn and found out what the "scavehunt" was all about. We got into groups of 4 or 5 and the RFs tied our wrists together. My group, made up of 5, had to do silly tasks, like attempt to all do summersaults synchronized with one another, to earn the answers to the questions on our scavehunt sheet! When the buses arrived we all climbed, still attached, to head into town to have another BBQ and finish the rest of the hunt. The different teams raced all over town for hours to finish! Some of the tasks included, buying a watermelon(which is $12
The girls!
Heather, Chelsea, and I with our new Aussie friends! yay!! Kat and Kirsty! This is at "Tats" pub. in Australia, my mom would be clipping coupons for that price!), eating ice cream cones at Mackers as fast as you can, counting the number of mail boxes at the post office, and singing in front of the courthouse. We got rewarded at the end by being allowed to remove the bands that attached our arms together! This day was exhausting so tons of fun!!!! Oh, I forgot to add that a member in my group seriously looked like Ron Wesley from Harry Potter! Can you say lookalike?!!
On Tuesday, February 15th, we had a really fun night! It started off with a progressive dinner. We all dressed up in semi formal clothing (Yay for dress up!) and had a speed dating type of event. My date's name was Brad, which was randomly chosen in the beginning of the week through a number system. We all ate dinner with our dates then started the REAL speed dating to get to know more people in Drummond & Smith! Everyone had 3 minutes with one another then you had to move 3 seats to your left. Right after, we had an event called "Tight and Bright!" We played multiple games in
Speed dating!
All dressed up! the courtyard while wearing wild outfits! It was pretty outrageous!!
On Wednesday, February 16th, Drummond and Smith had "Opshop night!" The girls and I spent the day shopping around town at salvation army type stores to find our perfect outfits! The event was held at Drummond's sponsored pub- Tats! There is a huge dance floor, DJ, pool tables and was tons of fun! The outfits were so ugly but that was the whole point of the theme!
On Thursday, February 17th we went downtown to the public pool. There are about 5 pools in the outdoor complex with stadium seating. We relaxed, soaked up the sun and didn't think a bit about the winter back home. That night we went to the UNI bar called "STRO" for the fresher bash. There was a free bbq, bands, a DJ, and dancing. It was a fun night to meet other freshers from the other colleges.
Friday, February 18th we had a lazy day to unpack rooms, play games in the courtyard, figure out our schedules, get a tour of the campus "up top"....pretty much do whatever we wanted! I still was meeting more and more people from D-block and
Tight and Bright!
With our new Aussie friends! around college. We went to bed early this night because we had to prepare ourselves for the ADVENTURE that tomorrow would bring.
AHH! Saturday, February 19th- Chels, Heather, and I all signed up for the international office's trip to go hiking, lunch, and see some views. We were DEFINITELY in for a treat. We loaded the bus at 9:00AM and set off for the one and half hour trip to Dorrigo, New South Wales. About 45 minutes into the trip, we had a tea break in a state park and took a 5 minute hike to stretch our legs. We saw some really awesome views from on top of this mountain! There was a waterfall in the distance, as well. We hopped back on the bus and continued on our journey to Dorrigo! We took another break along a site that is going to be turned into a train museum. We didn't leave the bus, but it was interesting to see the raw material trains that weren't sparkly like how they will be in a few years. I do not know the whole story about the train site because we were sitting on the back of the bus and
TIght and Bright!
Our whole college playing games in the courtyard! couldn't hear much. When we finally made it to Dorrigo, it was lunch time. We ate lunch with this HUGE lizard and also a wild turkey. We hike for about 3 hours after and headed home. It was a wonderful and exhausting day!
After hiking so much on Saturday, I was quite sore. That did not stop Drummond (or me) from going to the swimming carnival against the other colleges on Sunday morning. Although it wasn't as early as LEBY meets....it was early for UNI students to wake up on the weekend. We swam at the public pool downtown, a 50 meter and 8 lane pool!! HOLY MOLEY!!! I first swam 50 free.....I thought the pool was NEVER going to end. I also swam 50 back and 50 breast. (Again, another shout-out to Mrs. Yocum for her workouts!) I really never knew how much I appreciated a flip turn till after those races were over (Daniel and Sam- you better have practice yours by the time I get back!) The rest of the day I rested my tired and very out of swimming shape body by napping!
WHEW!!! That was a long update! Overall, O-WEEK was heaps(some Aussie
