22/07/14: New London Connecticut: Throughout the night Dawn Princess crossed the NOAA seasonal management area for the protection of Right Whales with the Atlantic Large Whale Take Reduction Plan, on the way towards New London. Compliance with the restrictions in this area involves vessels of greater than 19.8 metres to proceed at a speed of not greater than 10 knots during certain times of the year when Right Whales are likely to be present. It is reported that there are just as few as 400 North Atlantic Right Whales left in existence making them an endangered species. This type of whale is particularly vulnerable to strikes by ships as they are slow moving and do not startle easily from the noise of the ships propellers. It is due to this that these whales earned their name, as during the time of whalers they were known as the “right” whale to kill. They were easy targets to hunt because of their lazy characteristics, their oil was the correct type commercially, and they also floated once dead making it much easier for them to extract the blubber. Right whales are easy to identify as they have widely spaced blowholes

New London was originally inhabited by the Pequot Indians who called the area “Nameau”. The English subsequently established a settlement here in 1646. This lovely seaport city is situated at the mouth of the Thames River, bordered on the west and north by the town of Waterford. More specifically New London rests about 107 miles from Boston, 56 miles from Providence, and 128 miles from New York.

As soon as we got off the ship we made our way to Mystic Seaport and had a look at where the movie Mystic Pizza starring Julia Roberts was made, even had a selfie outside the Mystic pizza shop. In Mystic they have a drawbridge that has to be raised to let marine traffic in and out of the harbour, as luck would have it the bridge was raised when we were there, an amazing piece of engineering I even got a video on the Gopro. After that it was pretty much an uneventful day, had to order a cab to get back to New London got dropped off at the Mall which was deserted, they did
