Hi Everyone!
The last few days at sea have been wonderful for seeing wildlife. I've had the honor of seeing whales breaching, coming completing out of the water twirling vertically in the air, hundreds of dolphins following alongside the ship as if happily playing with this huge vessel, stingrays, marlins, sea lions, turtles, eels, flying fish, and some odd flat looking fish that came out of the water and flipped several times in the air.
Easter Sunday was spent in Acapulco and was blessed with my favorite....margaritas, tacos and chips and salsa! I decided to take a tour with a group of people I'd met on the ship and it included a wild boat ride through a lagoon where Tarzan and Creature from the Black Lagoon was filmed in addition to watching the daring cliff divers at night.
Our first stop was the lagoon, there were nine in our party and the guide was going to split us up into two boats for a faster ride, but one engine was not functioning properly so we all piled into one boat. Out in the middle of the desolate lagoon, the engine of the only boat now functioning, stalled and
it took 20 long minutes of rigging to finally get it going again. I have to admit, I was just a little freaked out as Boa Constrictors and Crocodiles are frequent visitors to this lagoon and swimming back was not part of the tour.
We were off to our next destination and the tour guide allowed a stop that was supposed to be a 10 minute comfort stop at Senor Frog's. Yes, that's right...what was he thinking? I guess he didn't know who he had in his van....I was mortified! 10 minutes, that's not even enough to pound down a shot of tequila, even if I wanted to! I was in shock....10 minutes, what the hell was he thinking??? After a bit of persuading on my part, we took a vote and decided to forgo the shopping in town and stay at Senor Frog's for food and drinks. This was the happiest day of my life. I felt like I'd died and gone to heaven! There was however a brief moment I thought perhaps I was going to have to throw myself on the pavement kicking and screaming until I got my way, but all that quickly subsided after
I had that tasty margarita in my hot little hands.
Next stop was a rundown hotel called Real del Monte that had an incredible view of Acapulco Bay. This hotel was surprisingly still open to the public and you could rent a room for $40 a night. In the 50's, this was a posh hotel to the rich and famous but now looks nothing more than a homeless shelter. Even though it was in poor shape, you could see the intricate detail and the beauty it once had with mahogany door trim, stained glass windows and dolphin mosaic in pool. After inquiring, it was indeed for sale and the owner was asking a small fortune of $9M...Anyone interested in a fixer-upper? I might be able to find someone to oversee the job for you. LOL
The cliff divers were young boys that looked like they were barely out of elementary school, if even that. The entertainment included a torch ceremony then a few boys swimming out to yachts for what we assumed were sent to watch the tides and alert the divers for the right timing for the daring task. At one time, we think the timing was
off just a bit as the diver got caught in a swift current and was slashing around out of control until someone threw a rope in and pulled him out of the water to safety. My camera was not able to get close enough to do justice to this art, but I can attest it is definitely worth witnessing first-hand.
As I write this we are still at port in Cabo San Lucas and I'm sitting on my balcony watching the fishing boats, tour boats, yachts and jet ski's coming in and out of port. There were three cruise ships at port today and you could only imagine the massive amount of people running about, but I have to say that the officials had the ship terminal extremely organized and we had no problem getting around.
Cabo San Lucas was just what I needed, another day for my favorite food of margaritas, tacos and chips and salsa. Who doesn't love this comfort food is crazy!!! I feel like I'm already home.
I had the opportunity to go into San Jose to visit a glass blowing factory and Cacti Mundi plus do a little shopping before getting back
on board for my final days at sea. I really didn't think I would enjoy the cactus tour but it was fascinating. Cactus plants were imported from as far away as Africa and they had plants that were used in the 60's as a hallucinatory drugs, and most importantly plants that produce the main ingredient of tequila for my favorite cocktail.
Next destination is where I will be disembarking - San Francisco. We are expected to arrive around 7am on Friday morning therefore this will be my last blog until my next adventure. I've met many wonderful people throughout my journey and so many of them will be lifetime friends. I've enjoyed visiting all the different countries along the way and I hope you enjoyed the experiences as much as I have in sharing them you.
See ya soon.....
